Revelation 11:1 I was given a reed like a measuring rod and was told, “Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, with its worshipers. 2 But exclude the outer court; do not measure it, because it has been given to the Gentiles.
That angel that jumped down, planting a foot on land and a foot on water, holding an open little scroll [or little book] is ushering in things beyond our imagination. Face it, God created everything.... If He desires us to have a nightmare.... there are no bounds to God's imagination.
I've been going to amazingdiscoveries.org.
Two groups of people are mentioned here, “them that worship” and “the Gentiles.” The first group represents God’s true church, spiritual Israel, while the second represents a false and corrupt church that professes to worship God but is not true to him. God’s true people are “measured,” or judged, while the others are not. The Pre-advent Judgment which began in 1844 is just like the ancient Jewish Day of Atonement in that the only ones being judged are those who have confessed their sins and had them transferred to the temple. Accordingly, this judgment is to determine whether those who profess to be Christians are really Christ’s faithful people.
At this point, Jesus has already called together the 144,000. Those humans are counted. These humans are not counted. The Temple has to measure up. The altar has to measure up. The worshipers have to measure up. This is not about Jews and Gentiles. This is about Christians and showboats.
These out takes are from revelationcommentary.org.
Therefore, chapter 10 is a critical chronological marker. In addition, chapter 11 will explain why John must prophesy against nations, tongues, peoples and kings.
Naturally, John would not measure people the same way he would measure a building. Therefore, John is to count the priests who worship in the area of the altar of burnt offerings. Why does God want these three entities measured/counted? We shall return to this question later.

I have to call foul on Revelation Commentary. If John counted the priests... they would have to fight like soldiers. IMHO... it makes more sense that the priests had to measure up, while the rest of the worshipers [Jew and Gentile] were not counted. Jesus has his army. He has selected 144,000 troops. He doesn't need to count the Temple, Altar, Priests, Jews or Gentiles. The Temple, Altar and Priests have to measure up but the Jews and Gentiles.... they need to be separated into Believers and Non-Believers. There are a lot of fakes in churches, temples, synagogues, and parishes everywhere.
I found this factoid at blueletterbible.org.
When the city of Jerusalem was destroyed in 70 A.D. by the Romans, they destroyed the city so completely that the foundations of the old temple are not easily found. Most have long assumed that the Dome of the Rock shrine stands on the place of the old temple. But new research gives some evidence that the temple may have stood to the north where the Dome of the Rock shrine is today, and that if the temple were to be rebuilt at its old place, the Dome of the Rock shrine would be in its outer courts. If this is the case (and the research is by no means settled), then it would explain why the angel told John leave out the court which is outside the temple, and do not measure it, for it has been given to the Gentiles.
Now that makes sense. God has a plan in place.... if this commentary is accurate... then there is no reason to destroy the Dome on the Rock shrine in order to rebuild the Temple. The relatives of both Isaac and Ishmael are on the same hilltop. Isaac and Ishmael were the two sons of Abraham.
Ishmael was the son of a maid. Hagar, the maid, was given to Abraham so that Abraham could have an heir. Ishmael is older than Isaac. Sarah, Abraham's wife, demanded that Hagar and Ishmael leave once she got pregnant with Isaac. God promised Hagar and Ishmael that He would watch over them. That Dome of the Rock is on the hilltop.... it's Muslim and it belongs to Ismael's descendants.
Isaac is the one that Abraham was going to sacrifice because God told him to do it. At the last minute, though, God provided a sheep to sacrifice instead of Isaac. Isaac's descendants became the Nation of Israel.

So here's what I see in these first two verses.....The Temple, Altar, and Priests all have to measure up.... The humans aren't to be counted.... God's going to sort them out.
