Revelation 12:1 A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. 2 She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth. 3 Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on its heads. 4 Its tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth. The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her child the moment he was born. 5 She gave birth to a son, a male child, who “will rule all the nations with an iron scepter.”[a] And her child was snatched up to God and to his throne. 6 The woman fled into the wilderness to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days.

a: Revelation 12:5 Psalm 2:9

Let's look back at Genesis 37:9-10. You remember Joseph and the coat of many colors. He was chosen by God.

Genesis 37:9 Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. “Listen,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.”

10 When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, “What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?” 11 His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.

So the woman was not just any woman. She was chosen by God.

Now let's look at Psalm 2:7-12

Psalm 2:7 I will proclaim the Lord’s decree:

He said to me, “You are my son;
today I have become your father.
8 Ask me,
and I will make the nations your inheritance,
the ends of the earth your possession.
9 You will break them with a rod of iron;
you will dash them to pieces like pottery.”

10 Therefore, you kings, be wise;
be warned, you rulers of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear
and celebrate his rule with trembling.
12 Kiss his son, or he will be angry
and your way will lead to your destruction,
for his wrath can flare up in a moment.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

So the baby the woman is giving birth to.... is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself.

Going on the Red Dragon.... One of the commentaries we've been using says the Greek term drakon can be used to translate the Hebrew word for Leviathan.

As the commentary continues it says that the drakon is the government that stopped Jesus from ruling here on earth. I can see that. Sometimes government can get in the way of worship. In the days of Revelation, government is not tempered by Christians. I'm sure without Christian standards government would become a monster.

If you would, please look at Daniel 7. Here is the explanation of the 10 horns on the drakon.

Daniel 7:23 “He gave me this explanation: ‘The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom that will appear on earth. It will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole earth, trampling it down and crushing it. 24 The ten horns are ten kings who will come from this kingdom. After them another king will arise, different from the earlier ones; he will subdue three kings. 25 He will speak against the Most High and oppress his holy people and try to change the set times and the laws. The holy people will be delivered into his hands for a time, times and half a time.

b: Daniel 7:25 Or for a year, two years and half a year

I'm sure there's a lot more to be written about this wild vision of John's [and Daniel's]. As a matter of fact, when I first read verse 5, many years ago, I thought it was about the legalization of partial birth abortion. I tip my hat to Daniel for interpreting the drakon.
