Revelation 12:7 Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. 8 But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. 9 The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.

Up until this point Satan [known here as the dragon] has been able to sit in Heaven and accuse the humans. He's been pointing out all our failures. One example of this is in the Book of Job. As you will recall, God was quite pleased with Job. Satan, however, argued that Job wouldn't be such a great follower if he weren't so blessed by God. That's how Satan works. He's a lying backstabber who is only happy when everyone else is miserable. Verse 9 says Satan "leads the whole world astray".
Then there's Michael. Michael has been around for a long time. In chapter 10 of the book of Daniel we see that Michael visited Daniel. We also see in chapter 12 of Daniel, that Michael is there when Daniel is instructed to "shut up the words and seal the book, until the time of the end".
Heaven has had quite enough of Satan and his thugs. A war broke out in Heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the Satan, and the Satan and his angels fought back. Both Michael and Satan were angels created by God. No matter how big Satan's head had grown, Michael was bigger and badder than Satan. Satan and his angels were sent packing to earth.
On a side note, I find that the more I read the more I find that I need to read a whole lot more before starting threads like this. Revelation is a complicated study for anyone who is not a preacher. I'm only a reader and until now I totally missed the correlation between the book Daniel sealed and the scroll that Jesus was opening.
