Revelation 14:14 I looked, and there before me was a white cloud, and seated on the cloud was one like a son of man(b) with a crown of gold on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand. 15 Then another angel came out of the temple and called in a loud voice to him who was sitting on the cloud, “Take your sickle and reap, because the time to reap has come, for the harvest of the earth is ripe.” 16 So he who was seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was harvested.

17 Another angel came out of the temple in heaven, and he too had a sharp sickle. 18 Still another angel, who had charge of the fire, came from the altar and called in a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, “Take your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of grapes from the earth’s vine, because its grapes are ripe.” 19 The angel swung his sickle on the earth, gathered its grapes and threw them into the great winepress of God’s wrath. 20 They were trampled in the winepress outside the city, and blood flowed out of the press, rising as high as the horses’ bridles for a distance of 1,600 stadia.[c]

b. Revelation 14:14 See Daniel 7:13.
c. Revelation 14:20 That is, about 180 miles or about 300 kilometers

I think there are two harvests going on here.... One is for the believers and the second... it's for those who are waaaay too stubborn for their own good.

This is what amazingdiscoveries.org offers.

The Harvest of the Earth: In these verses is depicted the conclusion of the great controversy, “the harvest of the earth.” In Matthew 13 Jesus says the righteous and the wicked will grow together until the end of the world, and then they will be harvested and receive their reward. Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43; Revelation 22:12. The King of Kings has received His kingdom, and now He is coming to take possession. At the first advent Christ sowed the seeds of gospel to take possession. At the first advent Christ sowed the seeds of gospel truth; at His second advent He reaps the harvest, and gathers the fruits of His labors.

“All the tribes of the earth…shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.” Matthew 24:30-31.

My grandmother [Nannie] use to have a vegetable garden. I lived with her when I was in High School. I worked right alongside of Nannie for a complete cycle. I helped get the soil ready, with plopping the seeds [just so many so they didn't choke each other out], with the weeding [let them grow so you can see the shape of their leaves so you don't pluck a veggie], and harvesting [choosing the ready and leave the "not quites" on the plant], cooking, canning, and freezing.

When I read these verses.... I can see the last harvest of the season. At the end of the season... the last harvest is taken.... the ripe and ready is separated from the done or bug eaten. The plants are ripped out from the roots so the land will be ready for the new seed in the spring.

It's that winepress in verse 20 that's the real graphic in these verses. Can you imagine.... so much wine that it filled up to a horses' bridle for 180 miles.... now that's a LOT of blood. You know... come to think of it... you don't see a lot of blood on the 6 o'clock news anymore. Back during the Vietnam era, we saw bloody corpses every night. We counted our dead with names. They went to our High Schools and Sunday Schools. I cannot imagine how any of the news channels would handle this story. Who's set would it play out on? Would they be watching this on God's big screen or would it be on a continuous loop in hell for everyone to relive every minute of every day.... that' last chance for Salvation gone.....

And the wine press was trodden outside the city, and blood came out from the wine press, up to the horses’ bridles, for a distance of two hundred miles.

1. And the wine press was trodden outside the city = indicates the place of God’s punishment of the wicked. The Greek indicates that outside the city is God’s place of punishment. This can be no other city but Jerusalem. The exact location of God’s judgment will be specified in Revelation 16:16.

2. Blood came out from the wine press, up to the horses’ bridles = describes the outcome of God’s wrath. That this description is figurative can be stated with certainty. The figurative language of a winepress naturally supports the concept of flowing juice. Blood running three to four feet deep for a distance of two hundred miles even with figurative language indicates a great slaughter.
