Revelation 6:5 When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. 6 Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, “Two pounds[a] of wheat for a day’s wages,(b) and six pounds[c] of barley for a day’s wages,[d] and do not damage the oil and the wine!”
I want to tell you a story about oil and wheat [well flour not wheat]. There was a time back in the early 80's when I was a single mother. With three children all in diapers I couldn't hold down a job because I couldn't afford quality day care. At the end of the month, food would be scarce. In an effort to get through the lean times I would cook chicken, pull it, bag it, and freeze it to be used in dishes later in the month, as my grandmother taught me. My grandmother had been through the Great Depression and she had a lot of hints that she passed down to me.
Anyway, one day, near the end of the month, I decided to make chicken and dumplings. I didn't have any oil, lard, crisco, or butter.... so I decided to make it with water.... what a dummy... I added water to the flour I had, and since I only used a little water it made something that looked like dumpling dough. I brought the chicken [in it's own broth] up to a gentle boil and dropped the dumplings into the pot.... they immediately disintegrated.... There was nothing to bind them together..... My son, who wasn't one to have his dinner messed with, put a spoon in the chicken & dumplings, came up with a few strands of chicken in a thick gravy, looked up at me and said "What is this? This is nothing!"
The black horse signifies hunger. It may be because the market controls the price of food, or it may be that the rich don't share with the poor. The fact of the matter is... in the days of John, the Jews used the wheat, barley, and oil as offerings. The pagans used oil and wine in their rituals and orgies. They offered to other gods as well.
Hosea 2:8 She has not acknowledged that I was the one
who gave her the grain, the new wine and oil,
who lavished on her the silver and gold—
which they used for Baal.
who gave her the grain, the new wine and oil,
who lavished on her the silver and gold—
which they used for Baal.
The black horse means hunger....
