Fire mixed with blood is hard for me to comprehend.
The commentaries don't tell us if this is real blood or another of John trying to describe something that is impossible to put into words.
What John does make plain is horrifying. All the grass is destroyed. That would affect all the animals that feed on the grass. It would also destroy the ground. Grass roots would no longer hold the soil.
john also tells us that a third of the trees are destroyed. Trees not only provide homes for animals and shade. Trees supply oxygen. Trees filter the carbon dioxide so many animals exhale [including humans] and change it into clean clear air. Trees also provide healthy soil. The roots aerate the soil. The roots also act as anchors for soil.
While it seemed that blood raining down on the earth is a horrific problem.... that thick blood will coat the vegetation so that plants cannot take in air... it also coats vegetation so that the sun will no longer be available. So it will impact the food sources of the world.
