Revelation 8:12 The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them turned dark. A third of the day was without light, and also a third of the night.
Clearly, IMHO, this is a galactic event. Something hit the sun so hard it diminished it's power.
Then again.... I've heard that after major earthquakes or meteor hits... there is a plume of dust that would hide the sun. I think I read somewhere that it's this dust cloud that is described here in these verses. John will use a lot of terms in this book that are confusing.
Did something strike the sun, as my NIV states here, or is he using the phrase "the sun was struck" to describe the darkness that followed the earthly event? We won't really know until this future events occur.
Looking at the devastation that loss of sunlight would leave in it's wake is even more horrific than before. Sunlight is vital to life here on earth. Plant life requires sunlight to turn into energy. Animals require sunlight daily as well. Humans obtain Vitamin D from sunlight. Lack of Vitamin D can also cause depression in humans. Sunlight also keeps us warm.
These are catastrophic events that are described here. Humans don't respond very well to catastrophic events as a rule. Governments don't respond well either.... look at what happened during and after Katrina as an example.
