Revelation 9:5 They were not allowed to kill them but only to torture them for five months. And the agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion when it strikes. 6 During those days people will seek death but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them.
This is a slow down mode thing. People are going to want to die in the end times.... but they won't be able to.
The first thing that came to mind this morning.... is these people won't know.
The humans that will still be alive when these creatures are let loose... they are not the Christians.... Christians were already taken up... remember... they were under the alter.

After an earthquake, God's blowtorch, a meteorite hit, and a volcano eruption.... odds are cox and infinity lines are down.... and I don't think the support phone lines will be manned....so they can't google the danger... and they probably won't know that it's only temporary.

This also argues against the notion that those stung are believers. Revelation 9:20-21 lists those who were stung. There is no indication that the unrepentant are true believers. Conversely, the list signals unbelief.
1. They were not permitted to kill anyone = continues the limitations placed on the locust-like-creatures. Unlike a true scorpion’s sting, which can lead to death, the locust-like-creatures are only able to inflict pain.
2. To torment for five months = is the ultimate purpose of the locust-like-creatures. To torment literally means, "to punish by physical torment." Interestingly, this is the same word used by the legion of demons in Matthew 8:29 to Jesus. This is clearly divine judgment. Most scholars are of the opinion that "five months" should not be taken literally. However, the fact that not one of the seals or the bowls has such a limitation argues that this time limit should be taken literally. The severity of this particular trumpet judgment also argues for a literal interpretation.

It's a real shame that the humans stung by these creatures won't know that the torment is only temporary. Pain is much easier to deal with when we know it can't go on forever. When I was in labor with my children.... I was happy to see the second hands on the clock silently counting down to the end of the labor pain. When I was in pain with a kidney stone.... different animal all together.... that pain doesn't ebb and flow.... it's nearly unbearable.... and it has no set time.... it's not a 45 second pain that will return in a set number of minutes.... it's a grab your phone and call 911 pain.... and the humans stung by these creatures will wish a kidney stone was the worst of their problems.

Jesus fed the humans. Jesus healed the humans. Jesus taught the humans. Jesus treated the humans kindly. When Peter sliced off the guard's ear, Jesus put it back. When they hung Jesus on a cross, Jesus forgave them.
Humans still insist that they are smarter than God. Humans still insist they don't need God. Humans still insist that when they die, God will have to let them in because they are "good".
Those are the people who will be stung.... those are the people who will be writhing in pain.... they will be cursing God.... they will be begging God... but they won't be giving their lives over to Christ.... because these are the stubborn stupid humans.
They backed the wrong guy!
