I had to do a very tough thing today. I had to put the older dog to sleep tonight. It was a very hard decision for to go through with it, and I still am very upset over it. She is in a better place, and in zero pain now. I held her until the very end. :bawl: :bawl:

Katie, as hard as it was, you did the right thing. :huggy:

IF IT SHOULD BE

If it should be that I grow weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad, I understand.
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day, more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.

We've had so many happy years.
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so;
The time has come -- please let me go.

Take me where my need they'll tend,
And please stay with me till the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time that you will see
The kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Please do not grieve -- it must be you
Who had this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years;
Don't let your heart hold back its tears

I am truly sorry to hear of your loss, and if I may add a bit of advice: If you're going to get her cremated, do it right away. My Izzy Wartzburg (RIP Aug 04) is getting done Monday, and I dug him up today. Definately not something you ever want to do.
She'll be there for you when you go, and she'll thank you for letting her go peacefully.

Katie, I am so sorry for your loss. It is one of the hardest decisions any pet owner makes. I'm sure she knew she was loved. Be watchful of Tuggy, he may also start mourning, as they got along so well.

A dog's plea
Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is more greatful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me learn.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footsteps fall upon my waiting ear.

Please take me inside when it is cold and wet, for I am a domesticated animal, no longer accustomed to bitter elements. I ask no greater glory than the priviledge of sitting at your feet beside the hearth.
Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for a cannot tell you when I hunger for thirst.

Feed my clean food that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.

And, my friend, when I am old and no longer enjoy good health, hearing and sight, do not make heroic efforts to keep me going. I am not having any fun. Please see that my trusting life is taken gently. I shall leave this earth knowing with the last breath I draw that my fate was always safest in your hands.
