Ripping people off on propane

In My Opinion
I took my trailer propane bottles down to be topped off, they were not totally empty.
At Ace Hardware in Edgewater they wanted me to pay for the full bottle size regardless of how much fuel actually went in it.
so I left and went to Leo's Vacation center.
same thing.
So I left and went to Arundle gas in Edgewater.
At Arundle they weighed the bottle, filled it then weighed it again to come up with the actual amount to be paid for based on,,, how much I got.

so, whats with the outright theft from the other two places?

Can't say I've ever seen any different. I've never had the bottle weighed first, but then again, I always drain it dry before I top it up.

I wanted to leave with full tanks, so I wanted them topped.
the one tank took 20 lbs, so it still had 10 in it. I would have paid for the 10 that was already in the tank when I came in.

ask next time how the figure what you used if its not totally empty. In my case, if the tanks were to run out while traveling, I would lose the refrigerator while going down the road. I cant let them run totally dry,, well, I can actually let one run dry because it will switch to the other tank automatically if that happens, but still, its the principal of the thing.

Im not going to pay a gas station for 40 gallons when I pull the truck in and top off with 15

I always try and find a place that weighs the tanks prior to filling. Places will try and rip you off. True Value in Charlotte Hall will unless you speak up and tell them your not totally out and it should be weighed first.

I agree with you, just never really thought about it before.

I sent an e-mail to the attorney generals office asking how this was legal.
I suggest putting into law that the tanks be weighed first and only charged for what was actually needed.

think about this.
I own the filling place, I buy 1000 lbs.
I fill bottles and charge for 1400 lbs.
I doctor my books, and claim only 1000, after all, I can show my receipt for the purchase of the 1000 to replace what I used.
I now pocket 400 dollars of free money.

you need to find a place that charges by the gallon, Not by weight. All the local places in my area do it this way. But, I have heard of that before.

Personally I dont care if its by weight, or by gallon or by liter, I dont care.
what I do have an issue with is when they think I so stupid as to pay them again for what is already in my tank, that I have an issue with.

at least make it look like you are not trying to rip me off, give me just a little credit for not being a total helmet wearing window licker.

Many years ago (don't know if they still do it or not) Tippetts Texaco in Hollywood would top off a tank and charge only for the gas they replace by weight.

I work at an establishment in Waldorf that fills propane, BY LAW all tanks must be weighed and then filled to whatever the rateing stamped on tank allows. Not pre-weighing is a violation its self let alone selling more than is distributated. ALOT of places rely on the auto shutoff valves but if they fail and easily do, then thats whole nother issue.

Question: Are places only allowed to fill tanks up to 10 years old?

I do think I remember something like that from a few years back

Just wondering because I got turned away recently when I needed a tank refilled. Said tank was to old. 11 years old and can't be over 10. First I've heard of that.
