Romans 1:1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God— 2 the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures 3 regarding his Son, who as to his earthly life was a descendant of David, 4 and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. 5 Through him we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith for his name’s sake. 6 And you also are among those Gentiles who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.
7 To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be his holy people:
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
According to the commentary, this is a letter Paul wrote to the Romans while he was in Corinth. Other New Testament letters focus more on the church and its challenges and problems. The Letter to the Romans focuses more on God and His great plan of redemption.
The gospel of God: Other New Testament letters focus more on the church and its challenges and problems; Romans focuses more on God. “God is the most important word in this epistle. Romans is a book about God. No topic is treated with anything like the frequency of God. Everything Paul touches in this letter he relates to God. In our concern to understand what the apostle is saying about righteousness, justification, and the like we ought not to overlook his tremendous concentration on God.” (Morris)
I have to confess.... It's been an unusually busy morning. My daughter, who recently had major surgery, needed to talk. For years... I have poured myself a cup of coffee and brought up the online Bible and started in on my Bible Study. This is something my husband has grown used to. We rarely say more than "Good Morning" before I'm at it. After the posting, then we have time to catch up on the plans for the day. This morning.... The coffee wasn't brewed before my daughter called. On top of that... I have to confess.... I don't know this Book at all. I mean who really reads the letters. Sure, they are nitpicked by preachers for a sermon... but who really studies them as a whole. I was in the brick-and-mortar church for decades and rarely did the letters get their own study. If they did, it seems the workings of the church in Christianity was covered better in the other letters. This one, the letter to Romans, is more about God.
Paul calls himself "called to be an Apostle". Ugh. Maybe this letter will convince me that Paul really did "see the light".
The "Book of Romans" is the first of the letters. Paul wrote it, or dictated it. Paul was a Greco Roman Jew. He's a Gentile Jew. He's writing to Gentiles.
Good Morning!
Romans 1.... Here we go....
