Has anyone had their roof replaced recently? Any suggestions on a good roofing company? What is the going rate these days?

without seeing it, or knowing the pitch or anything, i would say you are probably looking at about $3-4 thousand.

There is a new company, CJ Dove Construction who could give you a good price. The owner has been doing roofing for years but just decided to branch out on his own. Since they are new, they tend to price lower.

Their number is 410-573-1585 Tell him Christy referred you.

So who did you end up going with and how did it turn out?

I ended up getting Talbott roofing to do it. It ended up costing $4750 with new gutters. I called like 4 or 5 places and no one seemed interested in coming to give me an estimate. The other company I called (can't remember the name) who actually showed up gave me a quote of $5800 with no gutters.

Mr. Talbott did a good job and in a pretty timely fashion.

Good to know! The only estimate that I actually got was for $10k. And since I don't live in a 5,000sq ft mansion, I opted to make some patches and add it to my list of things to do myself.

Roofing should run you about $125 a square for removal and replacement, so on a 1500 sq. ft. roof you should be looking at about $1875 to $2000 without any needed permits. Anything beyond that is someone making a killing off of you. Now if you are going for specialty shingles or need a lot of lumber replaced your cost will be more. I did my own a few years ago, made a weekend party out of it and by the time the food and beer costs were thrown in I did my 21 square roof for right at $1500.

Replaced my roof last summer thanks to a tornado. Roofing by George in Mechanicsville. 34 Squares, 50 Year Architectural shingles with drip edge, ridge vent shingles, special rubber material in the valleys, priced in the $240/sq range. Best money I ever spent on this house! It's nice and quiet now, when it rains, or when the wind blows. Plus, George was prompt and professional. Give them a call! 301-884-4665

PS. Ken - I'm not sure your $125/sq reflects today's labor market. Even my insurance quote allowed closer to the $200/sq range and that was a year ago.
