Rust/Iron problems with Well Water

Just wondering if anyone can offer any advice and/or recommend a company to use regarding well water iron (rust) issues. We've lived in our house for almost 10 years (the house is close to 20 years old though) and we've just started noticing rust stains on clothes after they've been washed. Our showers, toilets, inside of dishwasher, etc. have been getting stained all along (Whink takes care of that though!) but these stains from the washer just started a few months ago. We're thinking we may need an iron filter but not sure if that's the case and not sure where (or what company) would be good to get that from. Any suggestions/recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

Do you have a water softener? Sometimes that takes care of the rust/iron problem.

What you need specifically is an iron filter installed on the water line coming into your house not a water softener. The two look very much alike, a tall tank like affair with a timer on top. The difference is that the tank in the iron filter contains minerals that remove iron from the water as it passes thru, then flushes it away down the drain depending on how often you have the timer set to "regenerate". However unlike a similar water softener that uses salt that needs to be replaced an iron removing filter doesn't and the amount of minerals in the sealed tank should last between 5-10 years after which you can have it emptied and new minerals put in. It will also remove any "sulfer" or rotten egg smell you might have in the water.

I had the same problem with my well about 2 years ago. Take a water sample from an outside source like a hose or any tap that doesn't go through any filter. Take it to Sears. They can test the iron count from your water sample. If the iron count is a little higher than normal, there are a couple of items you could have installed to help reduce iron. A water softner with iron reducing salt and/or an inline house filter could help reduce your problem. Chlorinating your private well could help, but you will be without water for at least a day.

My biggest fear for you is that the life of your well is getting closer to it's end. :(

Ok we are having a similiar situation as well. The water stinks something horrible! There is rust color that has stained our bathtub and toilets and now our washing machine is starting to get stained as well. I told our land lord and he just came over and poured bleach into the well said it would take care of the problem. Well... the smell is still there the stains are back. Ever since we moved into this house and have been drinking this water it seems like we have all been so sick! one of us always has a cold or some kind of breathing issue. Could this water be the problem? We have never had a well. We have always lived in a state that had city water. Do ya'll think I should be forcing my land lord to do more testing or do something different?

The smell is probably sulfur in the water. It smells like rotten egg. We also have a whole house filter on ours and change the filter about every other month. If we are a little late changing the filter, we smell it first in the powder room sink on the first floor. Once we do, we change it right away and the smell goes away.
