Sad but true

Sometimes you watch the powers that be, and you start to think there main goal is to help/serve the people of this country.. We have watched the Bush administration and we all (well, most) agree that things have been handled pretty well.. Then sometimes something slips out and you realize that maybe it is all about politics, and not just doing the right thing.. take this for example:

"Snow is to replace Treasury Secretary Paul H. O'Neill, who was fired by Bush last Friday along with chief economic adviser Lawrence B. Lindsey. The administration is attempting an urgent midterm correction to boost the flagging economy as the 2004 campaign season begins."

It sounded great until the last part about the campaign season.. I'm sure many of us thought this in the back of our minds, but didn't want to believe it.. If they had just put the period at the end of economy, it would have been better.. And no, this is not some "liberal slant", this is something republicans have been talking about since it happened, and why would the dems make a point to show the repubs are doing something good for the people?
Lets just hope the plan works and the economy can get back on the right track

See what I mean about when people ASSuME? The point is, all politicians do it. It just so happens republicans are in office now so when I mention anything negative about politics they ASSuME its directed at them.. You would think with controlling just about everything they can in the political realm, republicans would be a little more confident.

ASSuME

Do I ever want to know why you kept doing this?

I would guess that the republicans have no better ideas of kick starting the economy than the demmies.

The issue is that we are at a point in our national history where our government is run by two thought processes: Those of the people in power and those of the people who want to be in power. What is actually best for the country means pretty much nothing these days.

For example, social security is a mess and will soon be a trainwreck. Neither party will take the steps required to fix it (means testing, partial privatization, etc.) because they are fearful of encouring the wrath of the senior citizens who are already on it. And when someone of either party tries to fix it they are attacked by the other side. Same deal with illegal immigration, school and tort reform, welfare reform, etc. Everyone knows how screwed up things are, but no one wants to expend the political capital to fix them.

Same deal with the economy. It's not in that bad a shape, and is getting better. But Bush has to be careful to play the game and give the Dems as little ammo as possible to fire at him in 2004. His dad managed to pull the economy out of a bad recession during his last year in office, yet he got no credit for it. Clinton came into office and put his name on it. So Bush Jr. needs to have some things that he can point to and say "I did that" when the Dems start attacking. And it would be no different if it were Gore running for reelection in '04.

The group with the ability to react the quickest is of course the Fed; Paul Volker and Alan Greenspan are two of the greatest Americans to ever live in our time.

Greenspan is incredible. I've listened to him a few times, plus reads the reports after the feds meet and he always amazes me. Sadly, he is getting rather close to leaving.
