Sad day for hockey fans........

Lockout a near-certainty as clock ticks to zero

The current deal expires at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, and with no talks scheduled between the league and the players association, a lockout is a virtual certainty

The sides haven't spoken since talks broke off last Thursday :duh:

Players won't accept a salary-cap system and they are prepared to wait as long as necessary to get a deal they can live with.
Even if that means sacrificing a season or two.:loser:

It is sad. I love hockey. What is really sad is that there isn't much of a fan base like there is with baseball and football. I don't think there's enough fans to make much of a difference. It's a shame the game doesn't lend itself to televison viewing and tickets are extremely expensive...well for the nice seats.

Alaways wondered if that was the band or something else...

...may I call you Glenn?

There was a great piece in the paper that says it all about hockey:

It is a regional game and it's region is NOT Florida in June.

In an attempt to go big time owners created too many teams. Then, the sport didn't catch on to justify the big time TV contract therefore the money is simply not there to pay these guys anything anywhere near the other three sports.

No TV. No big bucks.

The players are insane because they will force the owners to do the one of the two things that must be done; contract. These means less jobs for players.

The other item is a workable salary system. Without big time TV the players MUST forget about the deals the other leagues have. THE MONEY IS NOT THERE.

I used to watch the Caps, win or lose, when there was a Patrick Division.
You got used to seeing the Rangers, Flyers and Islanders and familiarity bred interest. There was tradition, history and rivalry to carry forth in lean years.

I could not possibly care less about the Hurricanes, Devil Rays or Panthers.

The ONLY way hockey will ever get me back is contraction.

That sucks, I was looking forward to going to a Caps game this winter. Call me ignorant, but will this affect the minor league teams?
