Safe Mode ~ Windows XP

I can't get Windows XP to open in safe mode. What am I doing wrong? I have tapped F8 until my finger is numb!

Tap the f8 key when the computer is first turned on and is in the process of booting up.

When you first turn on the computer you should see a black screen with a curser flashing at the top left hand side of the screen. In just a few seconds the curser will shift to the top right for just about 3 seconds, the f8 key should be struck while the curser is on the right to get into the safe mode. Hense the tapping of f8 key, because you don't have a lot of time to get it exactly right.

I have still not been able to go into safe mode. I'm having some issues that I thought I could clear up in there. For example: Not being able to restore to an earlier date. Any other pieces of advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

If that does not work, there has been a virus going around that disables booting in Safe Mode and resists all attempts to get rid of it. Nasty.

Thankfully I found the alternate way to get into safe mode earlier today. And, the best part is it worked. Thanks to all who helped me out.
