Safety from wild dogs

Hello, I was in my basement yesterday when I saw something go past the window. Since that was unusual, I walked over towards the window to check it out. As it walked back from the direction it came from, I realized it was a dog. Not a small dog, either.

This concerns me because a few months ago, my sister, my mother and I got charged by a pit bull that was also loose. I don't know what kind of dog this was. I didn't get a good view of it. Now I am getting paranoid because I am scared that I will come home one day and see one of my family members killed by a dog.

I need you guys to tell me some safety tactics to keep myself alive from a wild dog attack. I will look into getting pepper spray. Is it legal to carry a pocket knife in PG and Charles county?

Is there a quality dog whistle that will work? I can't run away from the dog because I read that it will make me look and act as prey, and dogs are predators first.

Is there something I can put around my house to make the dogs stay away?

Sorry. The dogs were not wild, the owners live in the house behind mine. Loose dog attack is more fitting.

Which would you recommend? I'm thinking a handgun with a large magazine? What would the price be?

I recommend that you don't take advice from idiots, especially boys who haven't grown up and insist on playing cowboy. If you haven't spoken to your local animal control people, then you need to start there. Pepper/mace spray is not a bad idea. We don't need anymore people like the "rogue" cops who shot the innocent black labs last yr. in a police invasion.

Bear Spray... stronger than regular pepper spray...

or air horn (like the kind you take to football games)

Talk to the owners, then animal control. If neither works and kids are in danger....well, if it were to attack me on my own property it would have to jump a fence. If a dog jumps my fence and attacks, I'm shooting. And I like dogs.

Surely you jest ...
Here's a thought, ask your neighbors nicely to keep them confined. If they poopoo that then contact animal control to help out. Keep the # handy. There ARE leash laws. People can be fined.

Guns I feel are not the answer unless an attack is taking place and really its to late then. Its not the dogs fault he's roaming, its his irresponsible owners.
