Unless I am mistaken, it is named after Leonard Calvert.

Would that be Benedict Leonard Calvert the 4th Lord Baltimore or Leonard Calvert the 1st Governor of Maryland?

Could be anyone of them or the combination. I have not seen any specific documentation stating the origins of the name but I do know it was a Calvert. They also had the tendancy to make the saintly...

To Zigg72md, deadbeatdad, Ken King, jazz lady, and willie,

Thanks for giving the answer to the original question. However it does not explain the joke or conundrum of the first Governor's canonization, as he was hardly a saint, and certainly did not entertain any miracles that I know of.

It might be an obscure piece Jesuitry.

But it does fall inline with the practice of the times: St. Marys= Queen Mary
People of the time were highly religous and equated their benefactors with exalted titles such as saint. Remember the LORD of the manner? The names were not meant a sacriledge but more as a title of the highest respect.

Often, a benefactors patron saint name was used. Nicholas Sewall of Mattapany's patron saint was St. Nicholas. The church at PAX was named after the saint but also because Nicholas Sewall was financially responsible for building the church.
