The belief is that this all follows the investigation into Qatar looking to buy influence inside the EU. During the raid on Kaili’s home, police reported finding “bags of cash” during their investigation. In all the home raids there have been confiscations of computer equipment, phones, and more money. In total, reports are that upwards of €600,000 in cash has been seized.

Both Naili and Tarabella have been known as very vocal proponents of Qatar in debates within the EU parliament. They each work on committees or offices involving the Middle East. Those involved with the NGO were apparently acting in a capacity similar to lobbyists. Another individual detained is connected to a separate NGO that also promotes human rights in the Middle East. It was found to share the same address in Belgium as Fight Impunity.

Kaili recently made a trip to Qatar ahead of the World Cup and has been backing the country while speaking in front of parliament. Normally MEPs enjoy the privilege of immunity, but there is a rule in the EU parliament that it gets waved once a member is caught in the commission of a crime. Not only was Kaili found in possession of a large sum of cash, but her father had been caught on surveillance transporting cash in a suitcase.

Paolo Gentiloni, the European Union economy commissioner spoke about what this scandal might mean for the governing body.

The former Italian prime minister said during a show on Italy’s state broadcaster Rai that if the allegations were confirmed, “I think it would really be one of the most dramatic corruption cases in recent years”.

The E.U.’s response to bags of illicit and allegedly Qatari money being found at the homes of its senior staff was predictable. Dr. Johnson once said that patriotism was the last refuge of the scoundrel, and now it’s democracy (remember how it was “on the ballot paper” before the U.S. midterms?), which E.U. President Roberta Metsola said was now “under attack” in Europe. Charles Michel, European Council President, was concerned that these isolated incidents were preventing the E.U. from doing its job, whatever that might be. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (the E.U. has more presidents than Kentucky has colonels), in fine technocratic style, “called for the creation of a new ethics body to oversee the bloc.” Allow me to save time and money by suggesting that accepting bribes is much like stealing and you really shouldn’t do it. Ethics body dismissed.

Perhaps these ethical eggheads might be reassigned to the PR department, as the E.U. immediately decided that rather than tread a little softly around the great unwashed public just at the moment, it would instead cackle and announce a new carbon tax from 2027 that uses the punitive corporate model, but will be targeting the little people. I am sure my 83-year-old mother in London won’t begrudge skipping a meal now and then to save the planet. She was one of the many English voters who were tricked into the European Union in 1973.

The European Union was always a hybrid of the 1970s board game Risk and a Ponzi scheme. Sold to the British electorate as a free-trade alliance between old allies who may have had their differences—but, dash it all, we’re still chums, what?—it was portrayed by the media as one big, jolly French street market, with all that lovely cheese and wine nice and cheap. I know. I was there. The 1970s actually saw the birth in England of the “cheese and wine party,” suburban sophistication some of which my mother was responsible for.

As I recall, the foundation for the WEF and European Economic Community was in the musings of the Club of Rome back in the 1960's.

The world would just be better off with legalizing corruption. But you have to be transparent about it. If not, off with your head. XYZ corporation got the contract because they paid off senator whoever. Then people can make their decision about interacting with xyz corp if they want to or not.

Right now corruption is like the steroid era in baseball. Nobody talked about it openly. But we all thought it was strange when a guy's head circumference increased 4 sizes over the winter months.
