School by work or home??

WHen I move to NJ, I will be selecting a Catholic school for my son for full day kindergarten. The two schools I will look at provide before and after care.

Here is my dilemma - do I drop my child off at the school 10 minutes from where we will live, which has after care until 5:30, before care starts at 8am, -or- do I take child with me to town where I work (an hour away) and drop him at 7:15 am in a school 10 minutes from work and pick him up on my way home (aftercare there is until 6pm, and you can pay on a daily basis).

I have gotten responses that favor the school near home - commuting with a child may not be great, and he will have his friends from school in town. But, since I will be without support for this first year, I am paranoid about not being able to pick him up in time if Route 78 gets shut down and I can't get to an exit to bail. Plus, having to pick him up at 5:30 means I need to leave work at 4:30 at the latest, and if the drop off time for the school near home is 8am, that does NOT equal a full day.

My child's dad will be moving to NJ within the year, and I will then have him to lean on a little, but until that happens I feel funny imposing on any of his family (who will be about 45 mins away) unless it is a dire emergency.

ANyone been in this situation? What are your thoughts? What would/have you do/done? I am leaning towards the school near where I work, even though my family is having a cow over me commuting an hour every day with the only grandson.

I will be viewing the school near work next Friday, so I can get an idea of how big it is, what the area is like, what kind of student body they have, how big the classes, etc.

Thnsk guys!!

Latch key kid.

*sigh* I know. To add insult to injury, that is actually what some of the Catholic schools call it - "Latch key care." Some things haven't changed....

What's more important to YOU? If there's an emergency, do you want to risk the distance or would you rather be closer to him? What if you're off work one day but your son has school; will you be driving him an hour up the road for class?

I agree with Chasey. If there is an emergency or (thinking winter)since snow can get crazy in Jersey what if they shut down school early? It would be better to be closer to the school. As for the commute...get a game boy and lots of games...won't hear a peep :yay:

I would definitely choose the school closest to work, since that's where you'll be during the day in case of emergency. Plus you'll get two extra hours together every day. :yay:
