School Construction

Is there any reason we should be concerned with the air quality at Margaret Brent Middle while construction is going on?????

My daughter has had respiratory problems so bad this year, the doctor had to put her on an inhaler. She constantly complains about tightness in her chest and I am getting concerned. Is there asbestos in that old school? :barf:

That is a good question. If I were you I'd do some investigating. Hope your daughter recovers.

As old as that school is there is a good chance that asbestos could be around, but it might be a dirt/dust issue too. Call the health department and voice your concerns.

The Health Dept can do very little about air quality issues, especially in buildings since MD does not have any indoor air quality regulations.

Are they still holding classes in the building while they do construction? If not and there is asbestos in the building, then they contractor needs to be following certain procedures during construction because it will effect the construction workers more than your child.

Yes, the 7th and 8th graders are attending school there while they are doing this construction. I'd like to know if anyone else has noticed an unusual amount of URIs with their child.

I did some research and found out that the school MUST have an 'asbestos management plan' in place, and any parent has the right to inspect these records. The school must make the plan available within a reasonable amount of time.:yay:

I had the same problem when they were working on Piccowaxen...I couldn't breathe very well when they were tearing down certain parts of the building.

OSHA, as well as MOSHA, suck immensely:biggrin:

It sounds like the problem may be dust and dirt. Asbestos does not usually result in URI problems so quickly. However, I would definitely look at their abestos plan and make sure they are following it.

 A specialist is being sent to test the air quality at the school. Thanks for your responses and advice. They claim that all asbestos containing materials that were located where the construction ties into the existing building, were removed in September and the air was tested at that time. The existing structure still contains asbestos in the floors, ceilings, and pipes, but are considered safe as long as they remain undisiturbed.

St. Mary's Construction in Sound

Hey everyone, my school is currently making an addition to one of its facilities. Under construction is the Goodpaster Hall( a physical science and social science facility) and an extension to one of the housings titled Waring Commons(WC). As a result of this, a classmate and I developed a site that analyzes the types of sounds that you would hear and the effects the construction has on the campus community. Here is the link to the site: http://www.smcm.edu/users/tmconkwright/construction/

Dust laden with mildew spores and other microorganisms is generally very thick around building renovation projects and often causes severe respiratory illnesses. I think it's rather unwise of the school to hold regular classes near the construction unless they provide the students with respiratory protection devices similar to what the workmen are probably using.
