School Supplies

My son is going into Kindergarten, and I was wondering if the teachers on here could shed any light as to why 1 class would need that many items, for 1 year.

Why would every parent have to buy 12 glue sticks? I'm sure they'll be at least 20 kids in the class, so that would be:
12 x 20 = 240 glue sticks
24 x 20 = 480 pencils
4 x 20 = 80 binders
3 x 20 = 60 marble composition books

There's more on his list, but the items above are what I'm questioning.

I'm NOT complaining about buying supplies, I just feel that they're a little excessive, and do not understand how they will use all of those in 1 school year.

BTW, I KNOW that teachers are great, and I'm not trying to bash, just curious.

What love is all about
I dont know about the binders or composition books but, have you ever let him use a glue stick or pencil? Kids are rough on those things, I can see kids that age going through them quickly.

12 x 20 = 240 glue sticks - Kindergarteners eat glue!
24 x 20 = 480 pencils - Kindergarteners break pencils (some eat them)!
4 x 20 = 80 binders - Kindergarteners lose binders!
3 x 20 = 60 marble composition books - Kindergarteners color/scribble in composition books!!

 I think one of the most favorite years of my life was when my youngest graduated from High School -- NO MORE SCHOOL SUPPLIES!!! :yahoo:

I thought 12 glue sticks per child was a bit much also.

Wait till you see the back pack full of projects and papers that comes home each week. You'll have a mountain of "stuff" that shows you where all the glue goes. That was our experience anyway.

hmm...

it sounds like quite a bit in terms of supplies. they're approximating, but i guess you could always start low and go from there.

I never send multiple items on the school lists all at once to school with my children (and rarely do I buy such things as 12 glue sticks at a time). The extras will surely never make it back home if you do send everything in at the begining of the year. I send one of everything on the list or several of such things as the ziplocks (not the entire box). Don't worry, the teachers will send a note home during the year when your child's supplies need to be replenished.

You're a LOON :)
They will ask for even more glue sticks by the time school is out. I used to buy at least 60 packs of glue sticks when my kids were that young.. They were 10 cents a pack and I would send some in at the beginning of the year and save the rest for when they asked for more.

They usually use those composition books too, they write in them daily.

Not sure about the binders.. none of my kids ever needed binders until they hit 5th grade.

I'm looking forward to doing homework with him, but I'm SURE that won't last thru all his years of school!!
