School Uniforms....what do you think?

Okay.......Somd.com has solved the education issue in this country. Put all the kids in the same uniform and drugs and violence will end. Yeah little Tommy will wear that nice clean uniform to school and still go home to his dead beat father who's abusive. Why doesn't everyone understand that the way a kid acts comes from the home, not what he wears to school. If your kids aren't getting good grades and being productive in school because they get to choose what they wear I feel sorry for the future.
I disagree. I excelled in school in Europe, until I moved to the US at age 10. I was actually ahead academically, but I was FAR from being a cool dresser and I was brutally teased. For the first time ever, my grades went to hell. Luckily I learned how to dress to fit in, and once I was accepted, my grades went back up. It was 100% related to my dressing like a nerd-ball. I wouldn't wish what I went thru on any child.

You're right Juggy, what kids wear to school will have no impact on what they go through at home - good or bad.

So a kid that comes from a poor home and is subjected to abuse also has to put up with taunts and ridicule at school too because she/he is not wearing the "right" thing. But, if everyone is in uniforms, then at least, while the kid is at school, she/he wouldn't be a "lesser" person and wouldn't have to take the abuse at home AND at school. She/he would be just like everyone else and could just worry about getting a decent education so she/he could get out of the hell that they live in at home.

Maybe I'm off base here, but it seems to me that uniforms certainly can't HURT.

I'm not saying they hurt a great deal. I just don't see a use for them. I didn't always have the best clothing growing up but adversity made me want to work harder. It's just my opinion.

I've always said schools need to have a uniform policy. We have to wear them as adults when we go to work so why not get them used to it as kids.

Seems to me the only ones who would not want uniforms, are the kids/parents who have money and needs to look upper class to the kids who's parents have to work 2 jobs to make ends meet. I think the fights would greatly be reduced to cause little Johnny won't be getting beat up for his 150 dollar sneakers.

How much of that is attributed to you being a new student though? Regardless of how you dressed you would of still felt like an outsider.

Personally, I think it is a great idea. That will stop all the :bs: & :gossip:

"Look at that outfit so & so is wearing." :)rolleyes:)
"My Mom just bought me this Dior skirt." :)diva:)

I think if all the kids look alike, the clothing competition stops and grades will get better....eventually. The guys will see the girls all the same....pretty much. They won't be judged on how they are dressed.

Plus, I think in the long run, it would be easier / better for the Moms.
Girls....Clean white blouse, Navy sweater, navy blue or khaki pants. Boys...the same. None of this starring into the closet and trying on 13 different outfits every morning, and leaving the mess on the bed for Mom to clean up. :burning:

Society does this to all of us as adults. The kids don't need it.
you should have done a poll so we could see how who voted what

When my 12 year old came home and informed me she wanted a Coach purse for Christmas I about died. Yep, I have two Coach purses, but like Nanny Pam says, I paid my dues. I have a job and I can afford it. Why does she want this purse? Not because mommy has one - nope --- because ALL the girls in school have one! (which I doubt) UGH! She does worry about that junk.

I say -- UNIFORMS. :yay: :yay: Let the kids worry about school work, not who has what purse and who got the new Hollister jeans!
 Very Well said!

Jack...you "hit the nail on the head"...In our adult lives we wear uniforms, it may be a shirt & tie, an actual "uniform", certain colors of clothing. Uniforms give structure to people. Children need structure, it helps them feel safe and secure.

That exaclty what I was saying earlier. It either that or a much stricter dress code. Call it what ever you want.

Nobody ever said that uniforms would solve all problems. However, I (and others) think it will help. At the very least, I don't see a down side to it.

Uniforms VS street clothes. Uniforms less expensive.

so a stricter dress code like what? Anything that shows a name-brand on it you are unable to wear it... well lets see that narrows it down tremendously... :(

I do not wear a uniform to work. My husband does not wear a uniform to work. And I am not raising my children to be the sort of people who must wear a uniform to work.

And those of you who think that uniforms will keep some kids from being outcast, or prevent boys from ogling one girl over another - it must be a VERY long time since you've been in high school

I am against that sort of forced assimilation.
