In one study covered in the paper, students were asked to pick two of three quirky items they were offered to take to a desert island, and to explain their choice.

The researchers found that good-looking people–especially men–were rated as funnier when their comments were heard as part of a video rather than as audio alone–in other words, when the person speaking could be seen.

I'm throwing the BS flag on that one.


It may be possible that people are more inclined to laugh at lamer jokes if the teller is attractive (along with being more inclined to hire, hang out with, follow, etc. them) But the funniest people I've ever seen were butt-ugly. Most of the people who crack me up are ugly/below average/only sightly attractive. (I site Drew Carey and Mimi Bobeck as examples).


On the other hand you're dealing with two insanely variable subjective parameters. Humor and attractiveness. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder - and funny is in the brain of the audience.

I'd way rather have a cute little inky-dinky butt and a rockin six-pack than to be able to make someone giggle.

THAT is, of course, what they were measuring - not whether or not attractiveness made a quantitative, verifiable change in funniness, but whether looks made people RATE them as funnier.

So believe it or not - your statement confirms what they observed.

Yes, being funny makes men more attractive... but being more attractive does not make the man funnier. :shrug: There is a difference, no? :confused:
