Security guards hunting a serial thief who stole balls of copper wire have discovered it is their dog.

Jackie had been taking the shiny balls and burying them in the yard at the factory in Yugoslavia.

The guards had been told by management they would lose their jobs if the crook was not caught, but every morning another ball of wire was missing.

To their amazement, after installing a CCTV system, they found the guard dog was taking time off from patrol to go into the storeroom and take balls of wire.

The dog will be allowed to keep her job despite the theft, but the firm has ordered all the holes into the storeroom to be made dog proof.

Most of the wire balls have been recovered with the aid of a metal detector, but a small quantity worth around £200 are still missing.

A spokesman for the factory FLZ in Bor, Yugoslavia, said: "There seems to be something about the smell of the wire that's treated with a special protective coat that the dog liked, and she was burying them - presumably for a rainy day. Dogs will often bury food that is too hard to eat because it softens in the ground or to store it.

"While the men were watching the perimeter the dog was behind them stealing the merchandise - and covering her tracks by burying her loot."

The guards are hoping that the "copper addict" might remember where she buried her remaining booty and lead them back to the spot, according to Yugoslav newspaper Glas Javnosti.

Or maybe she was just bored with her job and wanted to play. I saw a TV show where this cop and his K9 went into a food store for some reason or another, and the dog stole some meat off the counter.
