Seeking advice...

OK, my daughter, who recently turned 1 year old, is a sleeper. She's been sleeping through the night for a long time now (from about 9pm to 7am), with the exception of an occasional fuss in the middle of the night. I usually can go in her room and calm her down and she'll go right back to sleep in no more than 5 minutes.

Well, she just started this new "thing". It started Sunday night. I put her to sleep around 9pm. She woke up around 2am just screaming like she was terrified. I went in her room and tried to lay her down and rub her back/pat her butt to calm her down. She was still screaming. So I picked her up and rocked her. She fell right to sleep. When I went to lay her back down in her crib, her eyes popped open, and she started this "terror scream" again. For the past 4 nights, I have put her to sleep, then woke up with her at 2am screaming, tried to calm her, and then just given in, and made us a bed on the t.v. room floor for both of us to sleep in. I have to get up to start getting ready for work at 4am, so I've just been doing whatever would work the fastest, so I could get a little more rest.

Is this something a lot of kids go through. Someone told me it might be a seperation thing she's going through. That I'm with her when she falls asleep, and when she wakes up, I'm not there. Please give me advice!!

This is an interesting topic for me, as my daughter doesn't do any of this, but incase she does.... be nice to know what others think :yay:

i would have your child checked for an ear infection. i have 2 childern and when my oldest would do this at night, she had an ear infection. when you lay them done the pressure builds up and hurts them. i'm not a dr. but that would my first thought. good luck and your nights get longer.

I will if she's fighting sleep at 9pm, I'll let her cry it out for no longer than 5 minutes. 50% of the time she goes to sleep on her own, the other 50% I will go get her, but she's worn her self out crying, that she usually goes right to sleep.

Screaming at 2am is a little different because it's not just us in the house. I really don't want to piss everybody off letting her scream and wake up the whole house. I might try it if it was a normal cry, but it sounds like she's just terrified.

Is this just payback for sleeping through the night for the past...11 months??

It's funny you bring that up, she is on antibiotics right now for an ear infection. She's had this infection for weeks now (this is her 3rd antibiotic). The doctor was a little concerned it may be the drug-resistant ear infection. As of her last doctor appointment (this past Friday), he said her ears were much better, but kept her on the antibiotic because she was still having a runny nose......HEY, I just thought about her teeth. I THINK she's trying to cut 4 top teeth at once. I was going to call the doctor and see if I should keep her on the antibiotic still because the runny nose could be from her cutting those teeth. I just won't want her to be on antibiotics for too long if the ear infection IS gone.

I know when my son was cutting his eyeteeth, nobody got any sleep in the house. He had the worst time going to sleep and staying asleep. Try giving him some Tylenol or Motrin at bedtime and see if that helps out.

Yeah, I wouldn't let her scream much either, as the other person said, it could be a bad pressure build up... It may not hurt to try another doctor, and just see what they say, and then when they come to their conclusion, tell them well "I normally go to so an so, they have had her on these, and currently this". And see, or tell them that in the beginning type of deal..may help some??

As for cutting teeth, I know some kids have a real bad time with it, lil J was cutting like 3 at one point and was sick, she was miserable also, but once we got her to sleep, she was out for the night...but normally her cutting teeth isn't a thing that bothers her at all...

As someone told me once, try numbsall or whatever it is   I've never tried it, but it could help out some??

If she wakes up in the middle of the night screaming, she's upset about something. You said you work, so I would ask the daycare person if there have been any changes there - new kid, pets, etc. In the meantime, just comfort her and get her back to sleep.

Mine started that around 15 months but when I let her cry it out she just climbed out of her crib and came into my room. I tried putting her back in her crib but she kept coming back. Sleep won so now there's three of us in bed. I need to fix this problem before the new one comes along and have done some reading so I'm feeling prepared to start the process. I definately think it's separation anxiety. If mine wakes up and I'm not in the bed with her she has a screaming fit and finds me. It's nice to be so loved but darn it I can't get away from the little beast.

My daughter slept like this also- from 2 WEEKS OLD :yahoo: - it was soooo nice.

Anyway - the ear infection was my first thought also. Something is bothering her, could be clothes, something new in the room but to wake her up it's got to be a pain or discomfort. Be warry of running to the crib right away - they catch on to that quick, a little fussing won't hurt.

I said let her scream before I knew she was sick :buttkick:

On a side note, got talking about this at work, and a guy here has a kid that is prone to waking up at weird hours, he will scream for 5-10 minutes, and go right back to sleep, now whether you come pick him up, or let him scream, he will scream either way, and then go back to sleep...but, he isn't sick or anything, just a weird little habit he has...

Given all this maybe try something for the gums at bedtime and put her down at 10pm - if she can make it to 3am it might be a little easier on you. Don't let the doctor tell you nothings wrong - you're right in knowing the difference in her cry, something is causing her discomfort.

Ear infections - we had no luck with the usual antibiotics. If she didn't get Zithromax it wasn't going to help. My doctor also explained to me that sometimes ear pain and a runny nose can come along with cutting teeth. Was skepticle at first but it did seem to be the case sometimes with her.
