Tesla has been fighting this fight for more than a decade, during which time Musk didnt do anything like this. I always love to hear the dealership association justifications.....

The Wisconsin Automobile and Truck Dealers Association has been fighting to preserve the law. Bill Sepic, the association’s president and CEO, told The Associated Press that Tesla should have to follow the law like any other vehicle manufacturer. He said the statutes exist to enable third parties to act as consumer advocates “in making one of the larger purchases of their life.”

Does anyone anywhere in the Known Universe believe that the dealerships act as 'consumer advocates'?

.... All most as believable as "the government is here to help you"

Case in point... My wife wanted/needed a car last year. After looking at different cars she settled on a VW Golf GTI. Went back and forward negotiating with sales rep/sales manager and we settled on a price. Returned the next day to pick up the car and sign paperwork. Got the "we need you to sign here-here-and here." rush.

I noticed the numbers were not the same as the day before. I asked the sales rep why it higher by $250.00. He stated the State of Ohio allows them to charge for all the paperwork needed to complete the sale. (I have seen this charge before when buying cars years earlier- he is right the state set a limit up to $250.00 for "paperwork prep")

I replied I don't pay for paperwork prep that it is the cost of them operating a business. He said the state requires they add it on.

Me- gathering up my papers and starting to stand I said "OK then, you just lost a sell" He said wait - hang on... He goes to his sales manger and the paperwork comes back with the 250.00 still on it but the selling price was adjusted lower to cover the 250.00 Guess the finance department received their 250 but it wasn't from me...

So yeah, dealerships act as 'consumer advocates' my butt!

Probably the same people who believe Elon Musk is heading up DOGE out of the goodness of his heart and not trying to tilt the playing field towards his personal gains. Sorry, I couldn't resist.

In all honesty this race may be a very early barometer towards the mid terms. Wisconsin is a 50/50 state. It could go either way. Trump is backing the republican and Musk is pouring his money into the race. If the democrat wins this election it might be bad news for republicans come mid terms.

But seriously, when Elon cries about democrats redrawing districts, does he realize this happens in every state? Maryland is one of the most gerrymandered states in the country. But Texas and Florida are that way as well, for republicans. Does he want to change redistricting in every state? Wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.

Well, we disagree on that first part. Of course, if Tesla's stock values improve and SpaceX keeps winning contracts, how do you prove it was corruption vs just being better than the competition?

Of course it happens in every state. So what is the fix for gerrymandering? How do you keep it fair? Maryland used to be one of the worst, but it got a bit better.

So the answer to allowing more competition is obviously toissue more permits or to not require permits to sell directly at all as long as you don't have an existing dealership network. Tesla didn't get all five of those first permits because they beat out somebody else there literally was nobody else asking to do this at the time.

To pretend this isn't a legislative mugging of Tesla on the state level is a complete and utter lie.
