selling a time share

For some reason my parents bought a time share 10 or so years ago and now want to sell it. Any one have any experience with doing so? Looking on line I see a bunch of scams out there.
They were cold called last night from a company that said they had a buyer even though they (my parents) hadn't listed them (the company).
Turns out the have already paid another company $600 to list it for sale in their data base which turns out to be another scamming technique.

Sorry to hear that. We have two timeshares and use the heck out of them. We've been very happy with our choices. Was able to deposit one and exchange for a cruise two years ago. We get calls at least three or four times a month asking if we're interested in selling. All they want is the "one time" listing fee then you never hear from them again.

I have two in Las Vegas. We were very happy with it until my husband got sick and we can't travel. Everything I have seen is scams when it comes to selling them. We have RCI points so we are just saving the points as long as we can. If you get points you can also give someone a trip for Christmas or rent it out to help get some of your money back from the fees. You gotta look on the bright side and find a way to make money on it. But if you do find a legit place that sells them, please post it here.

My parent's TS is in Williamsburg. Their MF is around $800 per year. It's just not worth paying it for them anymore.
There is a site Timeshare Users Group - The first and largest online community of timeshare owners providing timeshare resort reviews, timeshare ratings, FREE timeshare advice and FREE Timeshare Classified ads! which is a user group that you can look at to see how well they are selling.
You may be able to find discussion boards dealing with the company that sold it to you where you can pick up some advice on your options.

TY so much for the links. The TUG site says it isn't free but I'm betting it is well worth the $15.00 membership fee.

We have owned 2 timeshares ourselves. We sold one last year and will be attempting to sell the other one this year. Where you can sell it will depend largely on how much you want back out of it. The 2 we purchased, we got off ebay and payed almost nothing for. One was $250, the other was $1250 (+ ~$400 closing costs on each). The use we got out of them for several years was definitely worth it. The one we owned in Daytona Beach we sold through a real estate company that worked with that resort. You may want to contact the place you own through and see if they work with or recommend a place locally. We had to pay a commission, but it was well worth it in the end. It was done like a typical real estate commission. Nothing paid up front, only paid if it sold and taken out of the proceeds. Everything was completed and check was in hand within just a few months.

Our other timeshare is in Hilton Head and, unfortunately, is in a resort that doesn't partner with a local real estate company. I have looked at several sites that you can list on for free (Timeshare Rentals Resales Timeshares for Sale Rent Vacation Condos) or for a relatively low fee (Timeshare Rentals, Timeshare Resales, Timeshare Ratings, and Timeshare Reviews) that seem to get a fair amount of traffic. Hopefully we will get ours listed in the next couple of months, as the vacation season starts to pick up. There are many other sites out there, as well. Definitely stay away from the "pay us hundreds up front & we'll sell it for you kind of deals". Also beware the ones that say they have a buyer just waiting for your timeshare.

Good luck selling your timeshare. I hear this is going to be a tough time for it, as they are definitely luxury items.
