authorities do not plan to press any charges against them, saying they acted in self defense.

Can you imagine how this would have gone down if it had happened here?

This admission in and of itself from a public official is refreshing and foreign to anything you would here in the 'states. In the 'states the official would warn against anyone trying to defend themselves out of fear that person might get injured in the process.

That is what caught my eye...

Foreign officials do a cursory investigation and send the seniors on their way.
And the boat continues its tour...

If this occurred here (US):there would be prolonged investigations,...Lawyers jumping in, a commission to review safety for cruise ships,..cultural sensitivity training and perhaps trauma counselors.

Is it possible that Costa Rica does not want to risk have the cruise ships skip their ports (& loses the income?).--Thus the attitude:Sorry for the inconvienence, have a nice day!

Also...I wonder how those too wusses who ran away feel? The fled from aggressive 70 year olds...and let their campadre die?
