Anyone know some good software for a server box?
I would like FTP and or web access to it.

Does anyone know of some good FREE programs to let me do this?

It's not exactly free because you must have Server 03.

Yea I was going to say. That link is a free add-on to Server 03 kinda thing.
And no way and I spending the cash to get server 03 on this box.

I thought there were alot of free software like this but I guess im wrong. Ive looked around a bit myself and havent found much.

Load CentOS or Fedora on the machine... all the server tools you want. Not a penny to spend!

Blah I was really hoping not to go with Linux to keep this free.
I tryed it once and was disgusted with how nothing seemed to want to work right.

I looked some more last night and couldnt find anything. Looks like I might have to borrow some more windows software...

Outside of Linux or Solaris there is not a lot of options - but honestly, Redhat Fedora core or SuSe Linux are really easy to configure for a web or ftp server - the administrative gui's make command line administration almost non-existent. If you need to do something at the command line - just Google it.

Virtual Server is an application which provides "containers" that allow you to load other O/S's into them to emulate another machine - thus a virtual server...

For example, you have one computer running Windows 2003 or 2008 Server and load the Virtual Server package. You create empty containers and load windows into those. You boot the computer and after you login, you can launch these virtual servers to run multiple computers on one box...

For future reference fellow geekies - we have played with most of them out there and we have been testing with Virtual Box - it is really slick.

VmWare Server is still the choice for me - and you can get a free version. :yay:

Blah, I might have to grab that again though. Ive installed and used redhat and I also have a copy of ubuntu in my desk also. Im not saying its bad stuff. Just very awkward to someone that grew up on Windows.

Stupid Root...:lmao:

Yes... it's a new world, but worth it IMHO.

Depeding on how long ago you tried it, things have improved (in the last 2 or 3 years). The new releases are more friendly and tend to recognize all but the most esoteric hardware.

Ubuntu makes a good desktop, but stick with CentOS or Fedora for a server. SuSE is nice, but takes a little more thought!

If you want to make your life easier, get Webmin (Webmin) and put that on your favorite Linux server... then you can do lots of stuff by pointing and clicking from a web browser!

Yea I tryed it out a few years ago and didnt get too far with it all even with a manual trying to walk through how to set everything up. I was so confused I just gave up and reloaded Windows.

I might grab an old 40gig and try to put fedora on there and see if I can set it up again. Im going to search a little but would you happen to have a site that could walk me through setting up my box?

Also do you know if Fedora supports SLI or will I have to remove a graphics card for it to work?

Well im downloading Fedora... I didnt think the file was this large before! Of course when I tried it last time it was on like rev 4 and now its on rev 9
Almost a 4gig file for install.

Fedora Core is really slick - if you pick the package you want to install (Web Server and FTP Server) it will put in all the "stuff" you need. I also install all the Admin GUI tools - makes it easier...

I know Solaris, but Linux has enough of a twist that just 'effs me up!

Ok I got it burned installed and now my windows dumbass cant get past the login. Its a text screen like DOS and it asks for a login and password.

Ive typed in just about everything ive found on the net about it (not a whole lot) and im getting frustrated because I cant even get past a simple login.

If someone knows how to get past this devilish device PLEASE let me know before I put XP back on it out of frustration.

Ok ive given up on the thing. Even looking at sites that try to "help" you set it up are doing nothing more than giving me outdated help that doesn't cover anything that im seeing on my screen. Open source blows as far as im concerned.

Sorry - been away from the keyboard this weekend...

Did you set any passwords when you installed? Root is the default account installed... unless it asks you something like "who is going to use this computer" - I just cannot remember from a Fedora Core load...

At a minimum - 'root' is on there - try with no password, but it should have asked you southing on installation about a root account password.
