CSM Seven CSM Student Athletes Achieve Grades Earning Them NJCAA All-Academic Teams Distinction

Seven College of Southern Maryland (CSM) student athletes recently earned the distinction of being named to the 2018-19 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Academic First, Second and Third Teams.

“Year in and year out, NJCAA student athletes continue to set a new standard both on the field and in the classroom,” said NJCAA President & CEO Dr. Christopher Parker. “The 2018-19 academic year was no different as student athletes raised the bar once again to reiterate the importance of academics throughout the NJCAA. As an association, we take tremendous pride in knowing that our student athletes put their best foot forward each day to become well-rounded members of their team, their campus, and their communities.”

Katelyn Kluh, a two-sport, student athlete, earned All-Academic First Team honors for achieving a 4.0 grade point average (GPA) in her freshman year. Kluh, of La Plata, and a La Plata High School graduate, played middle hitter for the CSM Hawks volleyball team in the fall and a center on the CSM women’s basketball team in the winter. Kluh was one of 1,552 NJCAA student athletes in the nation to make the All-Academic First Team by maintaining a 4.0 GPA.

CSM student athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.99-3.80 achieved All-Academic Second Team honors and four Hawks achieved the title.

Semiya Lowe, a freshman midfielder for the women’s soccer team from Hughesville, has been named to the Second Team for attaining a 3.90 GPA. Lowe is majoring in mathematics and sciences, and is considering attending Florida State University, the University of Maryland or the University of San Diego after her time at CSM.

Also names to the Second Team is freshman utility player Kaitlyn Culbert, of Dunkirk, and a Northern High School graduate, for achieving a 3.90 GPA while playing for CSM’s softball team.

Two members of the men’s soccer team named to the second team for strong work in the classroom included sophomore defender Zachary McDonough, of Accokeek. He earned a 3.90 GPA. Freshman forward Nathaniel Morrison, of Leonardtown, ended the year with a 3.87 GPA. McDonough will be majoring in mechanical engineering when he begins attending the University of Maryland in the fall.

Carley Hebb and Sierra Walker were named to the All-Academic Third Team. Hebb, a freshman from La Plata, and a La Plata High School graduate, played goalkeeper and defender for the women’s soccer team and accumulated a 3.76 GPA. Walker, a freshman from White Plains and North Point High School graduate, earned a 3.75 GPA while running as the only member of the women’s cross-country team. Student athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.79-3.60 achieved All-Academic Third Team distinction.

A new NJCAA record was set this past school year, as 6,656 participants were named to one of the three All-Academic teams. This year’s record eclipsed the previous mark of 6,329 set in the 2017-18 academic year, according to a web update from the NJCAA.
