Sewer

So I got the letter from METCOM that they are revisiting the issue of expanding the sewer to Hollywood Town Center and Holly Gaf. I checked the web site and found out my cost for sewer service would be $150.16 a month. In addition to that it would be about $2500-$3500 charge to put in the power and pipe from the house to the sewer main and the grinder pump.

I am supposed to fill out the questionaire and mail it back with what I figure is reasonable. Is $150.16 a month for sewer reasonable?

That seems a little (a lot) high to me.

$1,800 a year (plus... as I'm sure the rates will increase with each year) sounds pretty darn expensive to me considering that those of us with septic tanks only dole out $200 every 3-4 years to empty the tank.

Would they be providing public water as well?

Even if they do... its about 30-40% high.
I don't remember, but i think in PA city sewer ran about $20, BG seems to remember water and sewer being about $42 at her old house.. so yeah.. a LITTLE high.

Sounds ridiculous...

Some random checks online revealed average monthly rates of $25 to $35. Yearly rates in parts of California (the state) were $150.00

Actually it would be cheaper to have the tank pumped once a month.

The problem is in the sewer district you have people who were included years ago and provided for by grants from the fed/state. they pay squat, $20 a month or so. Now any new sewer has to be paid for by those who are serviced by it. So people in LP pay next to nothing, people in Hollywood pay $150 - $500 (YES $500) because the cost is not spread over the whole county only those who hook in.

Now hooking in is mandatory for those who the health department say it is. If your septic is in bad shape you hook up. If not it is your choice BUT if your septic fails in 5,7,10 years down the road too bad for you.

I would think since you lived in your neighborhood for quite some time, you would be "grandfatherd'" in. Let the new developments absorb the initial costs. Shouldn't impact fees take care of issues like this?

That's not how it's been working. They are trying to force established homes to bare the brunt of costs. There was a family in Charlotte Hall that lived on a 17 acre farm passed down through the family and the calculation was that it would cost them OVER $20,000 upfront to hook up.

Well as I understand it this would only include existing dwellings. Vacant lots would not be allowed to hook in if developed. I have about 150 acres around behind my place not developed. I am sure the owner has been chomping for sewer and water because where I live wont perk to the new standards so it sits unable to be developed. If sewer came in presto! his land is worth 5X the money BUt if they only include existing dwellings he is SOL. If he wanted his undeveloped land included, his road frontage/acreage (which is what the cost is based on) would make his sewer cost probably $22,000 a month. Of course when he split it and split the costs up into 1 acre lots it would change.

You would think impact fees or the county and state income taxes would come in to offeset the costs. It pizzes me off that I pay county and state income taxes so they can build some more community crap in PG county that can get defaced and burned up but I get shafted paying $150 a month to flush the crapper. Where is my tax money?

Where is Stenny? Deliver the pork Stenny! $22M and my sewer would cost only $25 a month. If he brought in $11M it would be $75 a month which sucks but doesn't require my to grab my ankles and cringe once a month.

They have a bill in Annapolis to change the way METCOM can spread the costs out over a larger base. Everyone would pay close to the same be spreading the costs out over 800,000 people served instead of 10,000. Problem is the Democrat in Annapolis look down here and say "You are rich, STFU and pay."

We pay that for water and septic combined.

Air has a point. Review the case of Mohawk Drive in Charlotte Hall. They fought the same thing tooth and nail. According to Wednesday's paper their effort paid off and now they don't have to hook into the system. Mikey's sister was involved in the effort, if you and your neighbors want to learn how to fight the system.

Fight it. They just tried nearly the same thing with the houses on Mohawk Dr. in Charlotte Hall. Residents fought and won.
