"Fewer teens are engaging in sexual activity than in the past, and those that do are more likely to use contraceptives, the government said Friday.

Girls aged 15 to 17 the percentage who had ever had intercourse declined from 38 percent in 1995 to 30 percent in 2002. For boys, the agency said, the decline was 43 percent to 31 percent.

The share of never-married females aged 18-19 who had ever had intercourse was 69 percent in 2002, up from 68 percent in 1995. By contrast, for 18- and 19-year-old boys the share dropped from 75 percent in 1995 to 64 percent in 2002."


Once again, the guys are on the losing end. Girls as a percentage are still getting more than the guys!

I don't know Vrai. That sounds like a possibility but I think there is much more information out there, more contraceptives, and overall more consequences than in the past. Maybe both are the cause.

Hard to say. I wasn't "banging like a screen door" when I was a teenager, nor were most of my guy friends. The girls however...there wasn't a one I knew who wasn't getting it when she wanted it. Even the ugly ones...

I thought I heard that the new vogue is to stick with oral and avoid intercourse. Do you think this is what brought the numbers down, while perhaps sexual activity has increased?

I somewhat agree, but I think all the older "bangers" are more open about sex- so it's not so much of a challenge.
I don't think it's so much about rebelling by NOT having sex, but if it's not a challenge to be "social" :janey:, then kids have to find other ways to rebel.
Kind of similar to turning 21...once it's legal (or OK- in the case of sex), it's not so much of a challenge anymore.
