Shedding

Hi all, my dog recently started shedding something awful. He's a mix, not exactly sure what of - I think he's part pomeranian and part pekingese. His front end is tan and black and around his mid section he turns redish and has a poofy curled up tail and poofy pantaloons. He's the cutest thing and, God love him, everyone always assumes he's a girl. :lmao:

For the fast few weeks his hair has been falling out in clumps and when I pet him he feels very boney. I don't remember this happening before, we've had him for about 5 years. Is this normal? Shouldn't his coat be getting thicker for the winter?

Is he current on his shots? Do you take him in yearly for his check-ups?

Yes and yes. Upon further research I found that it is not uncommon for dogs to shed a lot in the fall to make room for their new winter coat to come in. Especially dogs with an under coat. I just didn't remember him doing it before...must be old age setting in (on me, not the dog). :lmao:

Thanks for your help!

I've always heard this termed "blowing coat". I had a foster dog who did the same thing... Buy a really good dog brush! :lmao:

If he's an indoor dog and has been for years....and he doesn't change in and out...they normally adjust to that type of thing and not shed as badly (still shed, but not like they would outdoors) with the winter coat. You might want to do some blood tests and a quick check up at the vet just to make sure. I'm just concerned because you hadn't noticed this as obvious in the past...
