"The South Baltimore Station, a shelter used by many homeless veterans battling substance abuse, broke ground on an expansion this morning. The addition will add 42 beds to the current 90 and could be completed within a year.
Gov. Martin O'Malley joined Mayor Sheila Dixon and other officials at the ceremony yesterday at West and Leadenhall streets. The current shelter is in an old city fire station, and of its 90 residents, half are veterans. The 42 new beds will all be for veterans, officials said.
U.S. Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin told onlookers that there are 25 million veterans living in America, in addition to the 1.2 million activity duty members of the military, about 200,000 of whom are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Veterans Day is being observed today with a federal holiday."
