Shipping a Dobie overseas

Asking for a friend, they are military and need to get their dog to Germany. They got the necessary shots but need to find a suitable crate. Seems they are getting different information from the airlines and military on what they need to do. Has anyone shipped their dog overseas with them when they got transferred or moved? Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

You need an airline approved crate...If you look up on the airlines website you will find the size..I think it states the dog must be able to stand and turn around..Vari Kennels are approved...also need an attached food and water bowl..I would pad down the floor deep with towels to obsorb urine if she pees so she is not laying in pee..good luck

I've shipped numerous dogs and cats overseas in Vari Kennels. Pasofever made some good points regarding the bowls and bedding. Does your friend have their reservations with an airline at this point? If so, have them look on the airline's website for specific information regarding the shipment of animals. If they don't have the flight yet, they should try to get a direct flight to minimize the time their dog is in the crate. Also, did your friend mention the USDA health certificate? If they need it for Germany, they will need to go to Annapolis during the week before their trip to get the specific form completed. If your friend needs assistance please PM me.

I have not personally moved overseas with pets but know some Sailors that have...

quoted from an AMC pet brochure from the DPS website:

Pet kennels (shipping containers) must be approved for air shipment and are available at most exchanges, retail stores, and commercial airports. You are responsible for following all USDA and IATA regulations regarding the size and type of kennels utilized.

The DPS website is pretty much the standard for all military PCS moves

I had to have a USDA Certificate to fly my dog from Maryland to Florida, but the funny thing is..the Air Line never asked for the dern thing. I know that Overseas Travel is different. Good luck.

Thanks, everyone, for the information. They did get a Vari Kennel, pad for the floor, food and water dishes and the USDA health certificate. They are flying out tomorrow so things should be in order. Thanks again.
