A vehicle is being pursued by the police for some sort of traffic violation at night. The driver refused to stop. Then the driver keeps on going. At some point the police give chase. The civilian driver discharges a firearm during the chase. A highway traffic camera captures an image of the driver firing the gun. So we can call this driver armed and dangerous at this point. Law enforcement radios relay the shooting of the gun to the other officers involved in trying to capture this guy.
At some point the vehicle slows down but doesn't come to a complete stop. The driver hightails it out of the car for greener pastures. But he doesn't take his gun, he leaves it on the front seat of the car. During a foot chase, the car driver turns towards the police who are chasing him. This is shown on the cop's badge cameras. The cops ventilate the guy. He's dead but not grateful.
On a recent road trip, I'm changing stations. I land on Al Sharpton's radio program. Some activist is the guest and she's moaning how the police shot an unarmed black man for a traffic violation. She's bitching about how the police are always shooting unarmed black men like Mike Brown. And what really gets her goat is that the parade shooter was apprehended without the police having to discharge any firearms. To her that was all the proof she needed to convict law enforcement of some sort of bias towards black men. Because a mass murderer white guy is taken into custody while a black traffic violator is shot dead. Of course Al agrees with his guest.
But given the chaotic nature of police foot pursuits, especially when it's dark out, can you say for sure that this guy is unarmed? I would imagine that you are considered armed and dangerous until the situation is rendered safe. But while you are still running around, you are a deadly threat to everyone around you.
I wish that some of these show hosts would point out some of the fallacies in their guest's theories. Many unarmed black men were actively fighting with police at the moment high velocity met flesh and bone. Cops don't shoot people that comply when they say put your hands up or get on the ground. Cops will elevate their tactics until subjects comply. Even if that means shooting people.
So now Akron gets to host the latest grievence olympics. A few folks will get new TVs and other highly sought after goods. Lawyers will make money. Calls for police to be defunded will increase. Rinse, lather, repeat.
