Should black Americans get slavery reparations?

Reparations are a restitution for slavery - an apology and repayment to black citizens whose ancestors were forced into the slave trade.

It's a policy notion that many black academics and advocates have long called for, but one that politicians have largely sidestepped or ignored.

But increased activism around racial inequalities and discussions among Democratic 2020 presidential candidates have thrust the issue into the national spotlight.

This week, talk of reparations made headlines after a Fox News contributor argued against the policy by saying the US actually deserves more credit for ending slavery as quickly as it did.

"America came along as the first country to end it within 150 years, and we get no credit for that," Katie Pavlich said on Tuesday, adding that reparations would only "inflame racial tension even more".

No, because then white people should give up their jobs so black folks can have them, and should also give up their houses so black folks can move into them. Oh, and there have been calls for exactly both of those things to happen over the last decade or so. Not loud, strident calls, but they've been out there.

Here's the thing: leftists are never happy; never satisfied. Sooner or later, there'll be calls for white people to be enslaved so "whitey can know what it's like," even though not a single African American in this country in at least 2, maybe 3 generations has known what it was like to be a slave. We ended that crap a 150 years ago. Think that won't happen? Did you ever think we'd (as a country) would elect America-hating muslims (hell, the whole Democrat party is America-hating, with few exceptions), and outright socialists to public office?

The worst part is that out here where we live, even in the Peoples Republic of Maryland, I see folks of every color getting along just fine, giving up seats for one another, holding doors for each other, talking about everything under the sun without getting mad and trying to kill one another, laughing and joking, babysitting each others children, working on cars together....the list goes on and on.

I think they should send the Queen of England the bill. After all it was the Crown that supported the import of slaves from Africa into the colonies.
They should also send bills to the tribes in Africa that were capturing others and selling them to the Europeans as slave labor.
BTW, I'm of Irish decent and as such I'm gong to start a movement to talk about the mistreatement and supression of the Irish, both by the Crown and then in the US.

See, that's the thing - it's the media and the politicians stirring this crap. By and large, just as you said, people get along just fine regardless of race.

I think white people who insist that black people live in poverty and degradation don't actually know any black people and just "seen 'em on the TV". When they say things like "the black community" we should all cringe at that blatant racism, lumping people together because of their race, yet we not only don't cringe, we accept it as a truth.

So they aren't all like "Good Times" and "What's Happening?"

Same here. For the most part I see the same thing. No hostility. I tend to believe its that way all over the USA. But, you know the media, they will take few malcontents and make it seem like 95% of the population is nuts and hateful!! As far as reparations go, nope dont believe they are entitled to compensation for which they were not affected, just like whites are not responsible for what happened 200 years ago.

I'm waiting for the list of criteria that will determine who gets paid. How many generations removed will it go? What about futre children after the money is disbursed? Will they get a piece of pie or are they SOL? How much will obama get? How much will his kids get? OH wait, barry's dad wasn't a slave.

How much cash are we talking? Will this put an end to minority set aside contracts and affirmative discrimination action?

If this were to take place I bet there is a spike in consumer spending. Same with the corner unlicensed pharmaceutical distributors. The payments should be made in cash but with bills that are a different color, to see where the cash is spent.

Right?!

I live in a predominantly black neighborhood.

It is not a ghetto, slum, or even below average/median income. It's a nice upper-middle class neighborhood. My neighbors are mostly middle aged professionals and their families. Just like the black people in my office.

Just like the white people in my office. And the white people in my neighborhood.

It's what natural diversity looks like - instead of forced diversity. Which is why politicians hate it, and continue to talk about how privilege and poverty are separated by such vast chasms of racism, discrimination and prejudice by privileged white cis-males.

There's no money or power in harmony and natural diversity.

No that was a false promise made by someone who didn't own the property or the mules to give them.

The answer to the question is: No.

No need for asinine explanations or rationalizations...the answer is simple and it is "No".

Neither, as stated by the typically idiotic Fox "News" contributor, should the US get any "credit" for ending slavery after only 150 years.

Should Native Americans get reparations? Or Japanese Americans that were interred during WWII. Or Mexican Americans whose land was seized by the US when it invaded what was Mexico in 1846 because James Polk wanted California?

The answer is no.

The answer to the question is emphatically "YES". Every black person who was legally a slave in the United States, or, their immediate offspring should receive $1M immediately and be tax-exempt for the remainder of their lives.

All others, sorry, but slavery no longer impacts you and has not been legal in the United States for well over a century and a half, and we need to stop discussing what was allowed in the United States for less than half the time it has been illegal.

The colonies declared independence in 1776, and independence was won in 1786. The United States was established via ratification of the Constitution in 1788.

The importation of slaves was banned as of 1808 - less than 20 years after the nation was formed. We only imported slaves for <20 years.

Slavery was abolished in the few states that actually tried to have slaves as of December, 1865, less than 80 years after the nation was formed, and less than 60 years after the nation outlawed the importation of slaves.

But, for those slaves who were imported between 1788 and 1808, or those who were born into slavery between 1788 and 1865, the above applies.

All else, figure out someone else to blame, or, as most every black person I've ever met does, realize we are all equal Americans and slavery in the United States is as impactful on your day to day life as the price of tea in China was in 1642.

Almost everyone I've ever met realizes this, I'm not sure why the current crop of Democrat presidential candidates does not.

They did get reparations. That's where this whole idiotic notion came from.
which raises a good arguement agsainst reperations for "slavery".
There was a direct cause and effect, US citizens of Japanese decent were deprived of their property, jobs and displaced from their homes.
They could quatify the loss. There were no reperations for slave labor from Asia (Chinese primarily) used to construct the railroads.
The US isn't paying decendants of Japanses interned during WWII today.
If the US decided to pay reperations to the decendants of slaves, would they have to prove they were decendants of a slave(s) or would it be declared to difficult to prove and simply being black would qualify?

It plays in some circles. Black race hustlers who make their living by peddling racism and white guilt liberals who are the biggest racists in this country eat this stuff up. Some exceedingly white elitist like Elizabeth Warren...how else is she going to appeal to her low education voting base? "Stay in school and don't use drugs"?
