Sick dog

OK, I have a serious question for all you doggy people....I am not making fun of anything or I am not trying to be funny but is there such a thing as mental retardation in dogs...? Son and his SO have a Chocolate Lab...He is young and is really a nice laid back dog...He plays well with my Black Lab..He has issues though.... He will not listen to you...It is like he is deaf sometimes...He just ignores you...When you call him to eat, he can hear just fine...I think he would eat 24/7 if you would let him...They feed him and the first thing he does when he gets here is go to the food bowl and devour whatever is there like he hasn't eaten in a week....When they leave my house, he will go out and just dive right into the closed tailgate of my truck....Bang, head first...He falls back to the ground and gets up and tries it again and again until we grab him and physically stop him...They have a SUV and he does the same thing to the back door of that....Bang, Bang, Bang until someone stops him...I am afraid he is going to hurt himself...He fell down on my trailer hitch last night and I thought he had really hurt himself..When son gets him calmed down, he acts really scared and very confused....He went out a second time last night and son stood at the closed tailgate to stop him and he dove in the fender of my truck trying to get in the back...Not trying to be cruel but he acts retarded...What they do now is go out and open the hatch of the SUV and when he goes out, he will dive right in the back if that is the closest vehicle...If my truck is closer, he will dive in the closed taligate or rear fender....Anyone ever hear of this before?

We had a cat that had a brain issue...cerebellar hypoplasia and he was off balance and had problems jumping and landing.

Wonder if the dog has a problem with his eyes?

Is he well behaved otherwise?

Just before they adopted him, he had eye surgery on his left eye...They supposedly fixed it but it doesn't look right to me and I really think he is blind in that eye...

That's probably the problem, an overzealous dog that can't see too well.

:giggle: Sorry... Ok... Labs can be a little simple but that behavior is not right. I would go get his eyes checked. Just to make sure he is not blind... I do think there is a doggie eye doctor in Annapolis.

Time to visit the Vet and get the dog checked out , could be something with that eye that was fixed or not fixed he could be cross eyed or who knows what , let us all know what you find out
