'Side Effects' movie explores the potential dangers of prescription drugs - Los Angeles Fitness | Examiner.com

We’ve all seen the commercials. The people in them are elated, smiling from ear-to-ear and living the good life. In the background, a monotone announcer presents a dirty laundry list of side effects. Things like “antidepressants can increase suicidal thoughts and behaviors, abnormal mood (mania)” are articulated with such normalcy of conversation. Seemingly, just enough to comply with the minimum FDA regulations around pharmaceutical marketing.

It’s not just consumers who pharmaceutical companies are targeting. They also market to health care providers, typically in the form of drug samples, gifting, detailing and financial sponsorships under the guise of continuing medical education. Is it any surprise that more money is spent on marketing than actual research?

The movie Side Effects, directed by Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, Erin Brockovich) features an impressive performance by an all-star cast that includes Jude Law, Rooney Mara, Catherine-Zeta Jones and Channing Tatum. This film explores the controversial issue and complexities behind prescription drug ethics and societal acceptance, use, abuse, and consequences. The premise contains a psychopharmacologic emphasis centered around the fictional drug, Ablixa.
