Signed up for cable

Super Genius
Well, they finally got the cable in the neighborhood finished and are ready to get people to sign up. They had somebody walking around signing people up, so I got quite a bit...high-speed internet, HD with the extended HD channels, and DVR receiver. Big upgrade next weekend :yay:

It'll be sad to not have DirecTV any more since I really do like the service, but I'll be getting HD and a DVR for about what I'm paying now for regular. If the cable works out well, I might even try something like Vonage and ditch the phone line.

Did Metrocast happen to mention their Internet Nodes south of Gate 3 are overloaded? Did they tell you your download speeds would be 6000 kbps (6 Megs) but you would only get about 200-600 kbps during most of the day and evening? I'm really curious about that because folks down this way are only getting about 10% of what Metrocast advertises in the way of download speeds!

They continue to add customers but are way behind in equipment upgrades needed to handle their customer base. I've been an Metrocast customer (internet service only) since they took over GMP back in October 2005. It took 14 months before they updated their overloaded equipment to deliver 4 Meg download speeds. Then they went to 6 Megs down January 1st and the problems are back and they need more equipment upgrades!

Just beware you may not get enough bandwidth to have Vonage for a reliable phone service. Once your hooked up I encourage you to test you speeds several times a day and ensure your getting what you pay for! Try http://speedtest.metrocast.net to see what your speeds are.

You can also check out this site and follow the forum of folks having problems with Metrocast. http://www.dslreports.com/forum/cover,2188~mode=shut

Best of luck,
Cal

VONAGE SUCKS...They drop calls all the time. Hard to hear and it just plain sucks. Stick with what you have.

WE have Metrocast and Vonage and they both work fine. We moved from Virginia and get a bunch more channels than we did with Cox and pay $20 a month less than we did. I am pleased.

I've been finding the Comcast telephone service has issues. There seems to be substantial delay. Because of this I find myself talking over top of the person on the other end. Whenever a call comes in there is this beep that occurs before the line actually picks up and sometimes (rarely) it doesn't pick the line up at all; it's just dead. Unless you put the phone pack on an UPS you will lose telephone service when you lose power, as well if you suffer a complete cable outage you will lose phone. Just some things to think about.

I remember my aunt telling me that Cox Communications was trying to get rid of Fox 5 from their channel lineup. She isn't happy with Cox Communications.

just one of those days...
Watch your bill too. When I switched to Comcast for the great deal they were offering with the cable, HD and internet I got a great rate. But January marked 1 year with them and my bill more than doubled. Now I don't see where it is worth it. I really did like the Dish Network better. The internet is the only thing good I got out of the deal.

We noticed that too at first. After about two weeks it cleared and we've had no problems since. We've now had Vonage for close to a year and love it!
