It's pretty friggin sad. I'm sure patients at that hospital are just left to rot. :ohwell: If that's what goes on in the waiting room, in front of cameras, what goes on when no one's looking?

Thats why when ever I go to the ER, I always take someone with me, even if I just take one of my kids. That way if anything happens, there is a second voice to be heard and I won't be just left to die.

An hour? That poor woman was there for well over 24 hours! Did you see the whole thing - IMO the doctor, the nurses ought to be fired and not be allowed to EVER practice medicine again. The guards need to go too. I don't get how anyone, especially someone who works in a hospital, can be so compassionless. What the hell is wrong with people?

She was lying on the floor for an hour and had been waiting for over 24. Sorry I was just so upset with what I seen on the video, how she tried to get up and wasn't able to and no one did anything to help her. :bawl:

My apologies to you if I came across as critical. I was so pissed when I saw this on the news - from the guard merely sticking his head around the corner and leaving to the other guard rolling his chair up to look - then rolling back. I couldn't believe that he didn't have enough humanity to get off his lazy ass and check it out. Yet I'll bet that happens a lot - if anything good comes out of it - maybe it will prevent something like this from happening in the future. What saddens me though is that I doubt, if this actually does prevent this from happening in other hospitals, is that it will be from not wanting to caught moreso than simple human concern for another human being.

I think most hospitals work under the 4 hour rule.

You go in you stay there for 4 hours before release. 24 hours is a bit much.

Obviously this place is to be avoided, but if we get free health care we all may be sitting for 24 hours to be seen.

This was a sad case. BUT this was/is a Psych hospital, not your typical emergency room. I suspect that this type of behavior may have happened in the past. That does not excuse them from helping this lady but I think it may help the context. The security guards MAY have actually placed calls to staff when it happened even if they did not go over to her to see what was up. The other thing I noticed is that NONE of the other patients (some using the pay phone) ever walked over to check on her.... All around sad story.

WTF is this all about:

On June 18, Esmin Green, 49, was involuntarily admitted to the psychiatric emergency department of Kings County Hospital Center on June 18 for what the hospital describes as "agitation and psychosis."

Agitation and Psychosis .... ?

and you get involuntarily admitted to the loony bin ??

Psychosis is a generic psychiatric term for a mental state often described as involving a "loss of contact with reality." People suffering from it are said to be psychotic.

People experiencing psychosis may report hallucinations or delusional beliefs, and may exhibit personality changes and disorganized thinking. This may be accompanied by unusual or bizarre behaviour, as well as difficulty with social interaction and impairment in carrying out the activities of daily living.

A wide variety of nervous system stressors, both organic and functional, can cause a psychotic reaction. This has led to the belief that psychosis is the 'fever' of mental illness—a serious but nonspecific indicator.[1][2]

However, many people have unusual and reality-distorting experiences at some point in their lives, without being impaired or even distressed by these experiences. For example, many people have experienced visions of some kind, and some have even found inspiration or religious revelation in them.[3] As a result, it has been argued that psychosis is not fundamentally separate from normal consciousness, but rather, is on a continuum with normal consciousness.[4] In this view, people who are clinically found to be psychotic may simply be having particularly intense or distressing experiences (see schizotypy).

loss of contact with reality ....

I wonder how many people could get put away with this during election time ...

:lmao:

Delusions

Psychosis may involve delusional beliefs, some of which are paranoid in nature. Karl Jaspers classified psychotic delusions into primary and secondary types. Primary delusions are defined as arising out of the blue and not being comprehensible in terms of normal mental processes, whereas secondary delusions may be understood as being influenced by the person's background or current situation (e.g., ethnic or sexual orientation, religious beliefs, superstitious belief).[7]

Thought disorder

Formal thought disorder describes an underlying disturbance to conscious thought and is classified largely by its effects on speech and writing. Affected persons may show pressure of speech (speaking incessantly and quickly), derailment or flight of ideas (switching topic mid-sentence or inappropriately), thought blocking, and rhyming or punning.

Lack of insight

One important and puzzling feature of psychosis is usually an accompanying lack of insight into the unusual, strange, or bizarre nature of the person's experience or behaviour.[8] Even in the case of an acute psychosis, people may be completely unaware that their vivid hallucinations and delusions are in any way "unrealistic". This is not an absolute, however; insight can vary between individuals and throughout the duration of the psychotic episode.

It was previously believed that lack of insight was related to general cognitive dysfunction[9] or to avoidant coping style.[10] Later studies have found no statistical relationship between insight and cognitive function, either in groups of people who only have schizophrenia,[11] or in groups of psychotic people from various diagnostic categories.[12]

It's sad that you have to think that way when you go to an ER, isn't it? This is a horrible story and unfortunately, I've heard others like it before.

This is a freaken mental institution - why the heck were these patients left alone in a waiting room, together? Can you imagine being so mentally disturbed that someone dying on the floor in front of you doesn't even phase you? What a hell hole that place is!
