ROGERSVILLE, TN (WATE) – The Hawkins County school system is responding to the revelation that children were served old meat at school cafeterias. The meat had been in the freezer for several years before being served last week.

Herrell says a cook at Cherokee High School also told him the meat was bad, but was told by the manager to cover it with gravy to give it a better taste.

Not that I am remotely saying this is acceptable, but it doesn't say any of the kids got sick. But this stuck out to me:

“They go to school, and that might be the only meal they get all day long, and it just very upsets me that these kids are going to school to get that meal. It just didn’t go over well with me when I heard we were feeding these kids meat that’s dated 2009,” said Herrell.

THIS is the problem... expecting our schools to be not only the source of meals for our kids, but their only source of food. And what the results when you expect government to feed our kids?

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the majority of people on food stamps those with children? Where's all that #### going? Especially if the claimed rate of misuse is very low.

If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding ...

How can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat?

Question, though:

Is the meat really rotten? Wouldn't it just be freezer burnt and not delicious? There are stories of adventure clubs eating 250,000 year old woolly mammoth meat with no ill effects.

I just don't get why a school meal is the only meal these kids may have all day. What are the parents doing with the food stamp money? If they are that bad off, then they have to be getting some kind of assistance. That irritates me to no end.

Frozen meat is probably not bad in the sense that it would poison them, it probably just didn't have the greatest flavor. A little gravy, all is well.

That is most likely just some bull#### they say for a more dramatic effect.

Well forget learning, according to this commissioner they go to school to get that meal. I had to listen to it 3 times to see if I heard him right.

It wasn't poisoned, it just didn't taste great, still food. Look at the starving kids on those TV spots, they'd kill for just a piece of that 6 year old pork.
