Size does matter!

I'm talking about LENS size.

I Went out for a couple hours Friday afternoon with my 70-200mm and was almost in the right place at the right time. Here are a few shots where 200mm wasn't enough.

I saw the Osprey hunting and watched it dive for the water but tree's blocked the catch. Here it was returning to the nest.

This guy wasn't happy with the Osprey catching his fish! It is the "Raptor Royal Rumble" as Kom says.

The fish don't have much of a chance against claws like these.

Oh yeah, i can't leave this out. I carefully snuck up the woods line to an Osprey nest hoping to get a sneak shot. I pop my head out (with camera) to make a visual on the nest and get the shot. Obviously not what i expected.

Wow those are some great shots. Funny seeing the goose in the osprey nest.

Pretty cool shots.

I know what you mean, i attempted some Osprey shots and my 200mm just didnt cut it. I guess I need a teleconverter now!

I recently purchased a 2x teleconverter and it gets more distance but it does come with a price. You loose 2 full stops of light and not as sharp. I wished i would have had it on for these first two shots. I need to play with is more and find it's sweet spot. My two shots in A few Birds in flight thread are with the extender.

500 or 600mm prime appear to be the lens of choice for bird photo's! I just don't have the cash to shell out for it.

I also use that same combo. The 70-200L with a 2x extender. My extender is the early MK1 , I am told the newer MK2 is much better. In sharpness testing with this combo I find only f8 to f12 to be good IQ. Better to up the ISO and shoot at F8 then be soft at wider setting.

When i first got the extender i did some test shots in the house using the tripod and i didn't notice much qaulity difference from F5.6 and up. I just went back and looked at the Osprey and Heron shots from the day i used it and i do see better results from the F8 shots then the 5.6. I will try closing it down smaller next time and hopefully they will be even better.

This is the best I got w/ the 70-200. I may have to look into this extender you are talking about. They were flying high at PLO when we were camping a couple weeks ago. First time I've been so close to one.
