Waypoint was the first to panic, releasing an epically long dissertation on the effects of real world nuclear proliferation, arguing that putting nuclear weapons in video games is the "ultimate" admission that "individual humans don't matter," even though the game's nuclear weapons aren't targeted at individuals. "Not a part of me finds joy," the author muses, in replicating the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

But the problem, at least for these journalists, isn't the nuclear weapons, it's the video games. Waypoint seems to claim that people using nuclear weapons in video games will consider using them in real life, and that using a nuke in Fallout 76 will awaken some latent, violent aggression — something left-leaning journalists often say about the video game industry in general.

Vice's Motherboard gets more to the point in their complaint, though: why, they ask, would you put nukes in a video game when President Donald Trump is crazy enough to use them in real life?

"But some fans and critics were horrified by 'the nuke loop' and I understand why," they write. "With a newly weaponized North Korea, and a belligerent American president, the post-apocalyptic setting of the Fallout franchise looks less like a fun place to visit and more like an inappropriate vision of a possible future."
