Slaughter house

My husband came home last night from his usual bike ride and said that a neighbor had approached him and told him that a slaughter house was going to be built on a farm behind us. We live in a residential area with this farm in between several streets. The gent who owns the farm has a herd of cows there now. I haven't seen any signs re this action and wanted to see if anyone knew anything or how I would go about finding info on this. How would you feel if this was going on in your neighborhood - I imagine you would be very upset?:cds:

If you go to the permits counter for the Department of Land Use and Growth Management in Leonardtown, you should be able to look at the file for any building permit they've applied for. One of the employees there should be able to explain to you what anything in the file means.

If you don't live in St. Mary's County, your county should have a similar office where you can do the same thing.

Actually, I'd make really good friends with my farmer neighbor and see if I couldn't get a hook-up. I don't understand the problem. Those cows are obviously being raised for meat. If the guy can save some money by slaughtering them on location, good for him. The cow is going to die either way. Why ship them however many miles, keep them in a holding pen for an extended period of time, to do it? I think it's perfectly logical.

Also, if you don't really notice the cows now, you really won't notice any difference to your lifestyle. It's not like the guy is going to be rounding up your family pets and children.

An example is that my next door neighbor is an excellent hunter. He brings home his kills and butchers them in his backyard. If I wasn't social with my neighbor, I would never know it ever happened.

I bet the farm was there before the 'neighborhood' - get over yourself.

The reason we are upset is a resale issue. How would you feel if you couldn't sell your home because you live behind a slaughter house? I understand where everyone is coming from and yeah getting meat from the butcher is a great idea, but hence the saying "not in my backyard."

Why would I be upset?

It sounds like a farming practice, and farming is a protected right in MD. It's not like he's going to be gutting cows on the playground.

I'm sure you enjoy a good steak now and then, I know I do.. and to have a source of FRESH steaks right next door!!? :yay: :yay:

I don't really think it'd cause a problem for resale.

From the responses you are getting, doesn't sound like it would be an issue if you got the right buyer.

If a neighbor hadn't said anything you would probably never notice that there was a "slaughter house" in your back yard. I'm sure we're not talking about a slaughter house like the stock yards in Oklahoma.. and it's probably him slaughtering his own cows.

The stench. OMG The STENCH! Rotting meat and blood and the rush of fecal matter as the life is pounded from the mighty creatures stripped of any sense of dignity.

Not to mention the piercing shrieks of mother dairy cows as they watch their progeny butchered in front of them or turned into veal.

Anyone who does this or condones it is guilty of nothing short of genocide.

But mostly the stench.
