Four St. Mary’s College students presented their original research at this year’s Phi Alpha Theta Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference at Bowie State University on March 30, 2019. Phi Alpha Theta is the national history honor society. The regional conference showcases undergraduate and graduate research that focuses on primary historical sources and that engages in the critical examination of current historical arguments.
Three students presented portions of their St. Mary’s Projects: Angela Cruz ‘19, “Benedict Arnold: Dismantling a Hero to Build a Nation”; Andrew Messick ‘19, "Will She Ever Fly? The Development and Fate of the Last British Airship"; Megan Root ‘19, “‘Who Will Not Be Silent?’ Youth Resistance to Nazi Occupation, 1939-1945.” Madalyn Wilkinson ‘21 presented research that originated in her historical methods class, "Was Early Maryland Racially Harmonious?"
Each student presented on a panel related to their individual topics and heard detailed comments from professional historians who reviewed the papers. All were well received. SMCM Phi Alpha Theta President Katie Herberger ‘19 and history faculty members Jeff Eden, Charlies Holden, and Gail Savage also attended the conference to support our student researchers.
