Was just wondering if the true use of the word is limited to Saint Mary's or does it encompass all of southern Maryland?

A redneck friend of mine from Calvert County called me a SMIB and said it was because I live in St Mary's.

His truck horn plays Dixie and he calls me a SMIB :otter:

I grew up in St. Mary's and always heard it was "Southern Maryland." Either way, it's still an offensive term IMHO.

Supposedly it started out as an insult to yell at high school sporting events and was directed at St Mary's high schools.

Can anyone confirm or deny?

I've always heard it as "southern maryland". The term gets on my nerves. I grew up in St. Marys and I hate when I tell someone that and they say " Oh, so you're a SMIB?"

Nice webpage lol

When I first moved here someone told me Calvert people were more "uppidy" than St Mary's people. Maybe there was something to that.

A term is only offensive if you let it be, if people didn't let it bother them it would probably go away.

I want to know the true origin of the word darnit.
Why do you even care? Any SMIB for that matter. I mean, it isn't like you had a CHOICE in who your parents are. I'm sure if you ask any SMIB they would all say they wished their tree had more branches. We shouldn't penalize the children for the mistakes of adults. So I say do away with the term SMIB since those being refered to just can't help the family they were born into. We should just target the real culprits and simply call them sister ####### and such. I think this is a better approach. What do you think?

Haven't you ever just wanted to know something? Maybe I could get a government grant to study it....I'll have to ask Lesko.

First cousin marriage is allowed in these states under the following circumstances:

Arizona- if both are 65 or older, or one is unable to reproduce.

Illinois- if both are 50 or older, or one is unable to reproduce.

Indiana- if both are at least 65.

Maine- if couple obtains a physician's certificate of genetic counseling.

Utah- if both are 65 or older, or if both are 55 or older and one is unable to reproduce.

Wisconsin- if the woman is 55 or older, or one is unable to reproduce.

*North Carolina- First cousin marriage is legal. Double cousin marriage is prohibited

I had never heard of the term "double cousin marriage" so I looked it up:

One state, North Carolina, allows first-cousin marriage but bans "double cousin" unions. (That occurs when, for instance, two brothers from one family marry two sisters from another; if each couple has a child, those offspring are double cousins.)

I actually have double cousins on my mom's side of the family :yikes: but fortunately none of them married.

wouldn't doubt it. but then again I was talking about leaving the offspring out of it because they had no choice in the matter. So fine, instead of sister ######, cousin ###### in more appropriate?

Well, SMIB stands for "Soutern Maryland Inbred." SO, I guess it's Southern Maryland.

I also have heard "Southern Maryland Ignorant Bastage" which could encompass a much larger group of people..:lmao:
