Smithing?

Always something I have wanted to try, but its quite a healthy investment to get started. I have been in contact with a few re-enactment groups up in northern maryland to see if I could use their supplies.

Have any of yall ever tried any form of smithing?

No smithing, but I've cast aluminum for a car club I used to belong to. Cast custom emblems, some throttle bodies for two EFI conversion projects, and some odds and ends

I still have a couple crucibles, safety equipment, plumbing and the propane burners, one of which Dougster here on the forums helped me put together. Don't have any molding sand or the copes/drags but they are easy to build.

Theres a guy locally that does some black iron forging and aluminum casting near Breton Bay. Give me a bit and I'll try to dig up the name.

Still havent gotten in contact with him. Some family stuff got in the way. Either way, I spent a good amount of time over the past week drawing and figuring out how to make a small forge, something portable enough that I don't need to leave it outside. What I ended up with was a concrete reinforced tub with a hand cranked air supply going into a steel tube with holes where the charcoal will lay ontop of. Whole thing will measure ~24 inches with enough area for a concentrated 16-18" burn.

I went to Lowes and got all the supplies *except* the blower. Still havent figured out what I can ginny rig to work. And I'm thinking about adding a bend in the tube and a "cap" on the outside end to allow ash to pour out afterwards. So, for the time being.... Im sitting here with a bag of concrete, a tub, some piping, a bag of charcoal, and a fiance with a strange "What the #### are you doing?" look on her face.

:p
