Sneade's in Lusby

I moved down to Calvert 25 years ago and luckily it had one of the greatest hardware stores in all Southetn Maryland .... Sneade's.

It was located next to Adams Ribs in Solomons, where there now resides a fancy-smancy bicycle shop. But Sneades was then a hardware store. They sold lumber and hardware and when hunting season rolled around, some outer gear. And they sold stuff for boats, both pleasure boats and workboats ... And they were staffed by the friendliest folks around.

Today they are in Lusby and they still have the friendliest and most helpful staff in Southern MD. But I was shocked to what I saw today ... A full layout of Yankee Candles!

Gone are the good years I tell ya ...

Sneade's hasn't been in Lusby for 25 years. The one you remember from then was probably Trueman's.

Yeah, really. Twenty five years ago Sneade's only location was at the corner of 2nd and Chesapeake in North Beach (what in now is Metropolitan Appliance). They moved up to Boyd's Turn Rd. and 260 when the Dunkirk Supply property there went up for sale after Mary Harrison died.

Sneade's opened in Lusby about 10 or so years ago, as someone else already mentioned.

Got it. It was your wording. They have not been there FOR 25 vs not been there IN 25, which is how I read it.

And BTW, the OP never said they were in Lusby for 25 years. He said they were in Solomons, then Lusby.

Tervis tumblers, garden flags, greeting cards, gifty stuff...they do carry a lot of oddball stuff not found in most small hardware stores!

The Sneads in Owings is still a great place. But seemingly invisible is the new hardware store behind the Walmart in Dunkirk. The man also owns the rental place formerly known as Jim's Air in PF. Its a good place to find that metric screwdriver or anything else you need. I'd give them an 8 out of 10

P. S. Sadly, Patrick Harkey died last week after selling what was left of Jims Air franchise.

Small businesses have to be smart and evolve. If you have a wife, she may enjoy checking out the candles while you are shopping for other things - she may even be more likely to go there with you knowing that there is something that interests her there. Good all around for the business. She is occupied while you check things out.

I love hardware stores, and especially those that have a "different" variety of items. ACE is the same.

Sometimes these small businesses like Sneades may not have the room for a large expansive inventory. So they carry things that are known to work.

I re did the yard this year and after I reseeded noticed the mole problem got worse. Tried a few things that Lowe's had and nothing worked. They had a wide selection of stuff and I found none of it to be worth a fart in a windstorm.

So I got on the net and started looking at some university studies as to what works best and they said traps. And the spring loaded traps work best. I could not find any locally here in lower St. Mary's so one day I happened to be on the Island and decided to go up and try Sneads. They had one thing, Traps, and they were the exact, spring loaded traps I was looking for.

Dyson Lumber is the same way. They keep it simple and sell what works. They don't try to sell every single tool or item that a particular manufacturer or brand puts out. Just what works.

I am finding more and more that I prefer going to Dyson's or Sneads over Lowe's.

Edit: Adding an afterthought. I have been to Dyson's about 8-9 times since Aug 1st when I started my lawn renovation project. 2 of the 3 people that have waited on me at the register welcome me when I walk into the store now and remember my name. Don't get that at Lowe's

Been with Lowe's over 11 years (10 in Illinois, the balance here). I will be the first to admit that the customer experience IS catch as catch can. I try to be better than that.

I know at Lusby Hardware in PF.... if they don't have a hardware item... they can probably get it for you.... Sneades and Dyson have Lumber.... Lusby Hardware has hardware.... and they know what you need when you tell them what you're trying to do.... Small stores are the best!!!!!

Trueman's was in St. Leonard. Sneads took over Jimmy Swicklas ACE Hardware in Solomons and later moved to Lusby.

Yeah. I'm bad with south County geography. It wasn't all that long ago (15 years?) that Sneade's took over Swicklas.

I guess my point was that 25 years ago Sneade's was still just in North Beach.

As a note, I'm there way too much and go back and forth from being satisfied to being pissed off.

I lub Dyson's! Too bad I have to drive from Lusby to Great Mills, but the trip has always been worth it. Plus, if I need somebody in a certain trade, like plumbing or electrical, I ask them for a few names. They've never steered me wrong yet.

I still love that place. Small and cramped and has the best staff and service. And pretty girls at the checkout registers.
